Book Adaption ... how?

I am attempting to adapt a book for radio. I've submitted plays before now and have set them out following BBC guidelines.

Having never adapted a book before, I have been looking for something that might guide me in some way but have drawn a blank.

Is there anyone that can recommend a website / book on how to adapt a book for radio (or even better, hints and tips from someone who has successfully achieved this)

Is adaption a word? It looks mighty odd to me. Anyhow that didn't help, and neither will this much. But just in case you haven't pondered on this issue, the first thing that sprang to mind was rights issues and copyright. I don't know how you check, but finding out whether the transmission rights have been sold before spending a moment writing sounds a good idea. Also, if alive, I'd contact the author for some extra insight into what he/she feels is important.

Beyond that I can only think how I might do it, and I'd break the story down into scenes, perhaps on yellow stickies, then map out the story and the flow of the plot with the causes and effects, action and reaction, if you know what I mean. Then I'd delete all sub-plots and work out the key scenes of the story that can't be removed and then I'd work on combining as many scenes as possible to avoid too much time-consuming moving around. But I'm woffling... best of luck!

Adaption is a word. Perhaps adaptation may have been better. However if the purpose of language is to convey meaning the OP made themselves understood.

Now - is 'woffling' a word? And does it matter because we know you probably mean 'waffling'? :D

This book may be useful. It's quite a specialist field though. Could you approach someone in the know? Is this something you have been asked to do or something a little more 'speccy'? Can you tell us what book it is?

Thanks all and, yes, adaptation is a better word :o

I am currently checking out copyright etc. and therefore am very much in the early stages of this process. My interest is purely personal and I know this will be a huge challenge.

The author is Sanora Babb - a really amazing writer. This link will tell you more.
