I think the issue is when threads cross the line from being a discussion about a particular event, speech, policy, comment or whatever... and a poster deciding to express their personal opinion about a political party and start a thread to basically expresses that view. If we all did that the forum would be a mess. This isn't really the place for activism. At least I don't believe it is.

True. Rule-breaking is probably the reason but deleting the thread is too easy and a disrespectful way to deal with it. [Users here are 'customers' not oiks!]

So a good board policy (I've seen elsewhere) would be to give someone a public warning if they mildly break a rule and then ban them for a period if they ignore the warning and carry on.

Delete a post only when strictly necessary (eg legal reasons) but NEVER just delete a whole thread which includes the thoughtful carefully- worded comments from posters who behave themselves - that's just crass and lazy 'policlng'. It also makes people wonder what's the point of joining a discussion if someone can delete it at a stroke.

Someones do not delete anything. The moderators maintain standard on this forum. Their rules are clear for all FMs to read.

Customers is too strong a word for it...income generators for the ad sponsorship.

On a site BTW owned by a US media corporation (Hearst...the alleged model for Welles' "Citizen Kane"...and which they did their level best to get banned)

They're "someones" too! And posts have been deleted, not always helpfully.

Their function is to facilitate the discussion and to enforce the rules.

A couple of years ago posts kept getting deleted on a thread. The missing ones included more than one of mine which contained some detail on the topic which took some time to cmpose and carefully avoided any personal attacks. Whole swathes of good, carefully argued posts of several well-behaved people disappeared along with the ones they didn't like but with no explanation of what was wrong with the deleted posts.

These actions got in the way of the discussion rather than helping keep it on track within the rules. This caused more argument because people accused other of reporting them and we didn't have the posts to sort it out and any reference to the mods was removed!

I hope they were dismissed or at least provided with some guidance about how to moderate.

Take it up with the moderators.

Threads tend to get deleted when there are legal issues and because they contain personal abuse.

If you don't like the Tories then state your objections and make a cogent case against their works.

Deleting individual posts can be tricky as they get quoted or referred to and the whole thread begins to make less and less sense and probably made little sense in the first place.

Locking threads that have deteriorated is much more effective, the one locked around 12.08 today has already nearly disappeared from page 1.

When the mods clean a thread they will remove the offending posts, and the posts of people quoting the offending posts.

So if you're posting a "good, carefully argued post" against the comments of an idiot - don't include a quote of the post made by the idiot within your post.

Well I don't know about deleted threads, but I think I spy the problem: lefty outrage hounds working themselves up into a lather and just outstretching themselves. The following from a thread that wasn't deleted, just locked:

"What a piece of nasty dishonest politics by this tory toff

he is the worst form of a nasty lying politican

He has certainly been full of sh1t from day 1

    He's lying.

He could not tell the truth if he tried.

If hell exists, this monster has earned his entry.

What marks him out as a particularly disgusting specimen of humanity is...

As a professed christian he should be feeling the fires of hell at his backside

The only thing...has succeeded at in his life is being a total failure.

...is so rotten, even the rats wouldn't touch him"

Not too many "thoughtful" or "well-worded" comments in there, although I acknowledge that by the standards of English of your average student union rep or socialist workers party activist the above choice selection is probably almost Shakespearean in eloquence. However, good reason to bid a fond adieu to a participant or two. All the more time to hang out in the SU bar.

I suspect the deleted thread was more of the same and worse.

Is he actually banned? Although our opinions are on opposite sides of the political spectrum I will still miss his strong opinions etc. , Why was he banned? I know he was passionate but there's nothing wrong with that!

Not too dis-similar to the personal attacks that a certain PM David Cameron has been heaping against Ed Miliband in the past few days then, which always says far more about the character of the person throwing the abuse than the recipient.

If David Cameron used these forums he would be banned, no doubt, for his recent comments.

However he isn't (or is he?...) Would explain a lot!

It's easy to get carried away. I hope the mods give people some space during these difficult few weeks.

Threads only get deleted because they are reported to the moderators. The other day EDL/UKIP/BNP lovin' people took offense to a thread with a Nazi slogan in the title and got it deleted, whilst simultaneously defending Nigel and his fellow gauleiters' decision to band with members of a party led by Holocaust deniers in the European Parliament.

Sorry, I was tongue in cheek. The only reason DS will ever ban him is for abuse of bandwidth. No doubt the old pinko Marxist windbag will be around for years to come.

(note to trigger-happy mods: that last bit was a joke as well)

Well I'll take your word for it that Dave said of Ed "He has certainly been full of sh1t from day 1", but with a touch of scepticism.

But 90% of the threads that still exist are just like this too!

I know that's the strange part whatever is said about each political party is tit for tat so why is one particular party being singled out

There has been a lot of posts recently on the forum which have been very rude and crude so I for one am glad they have been deleted.....its a shame people feel the need to do so (on all sides) .....and just shows that they have no other argument to make than to be like that.....which is a shame....

Depends, if he hasn't misbehaved too much and had previous bans, he should be back in a few days.
