I might like/have liked the Mitchells more if hadn't been for Peggy. I never felt she deserved to be landlady of the Vic. All those years she felt out of place to me and very much like a wannabe.
Den, Angie and Sharon were EastEnders' original first family.
The Mitchells, while great in their own right, are merely pretenders to the throne.
The original Mitchells had the banshee and the slapper dragging them down - as good as the brothers were in the early to late 90's.
No Eastenders characters were ever as big as Den and Angie were in the early years of the show - the nation was glued to the screen at their every move.
And short lived as his comeback was Den did set up the Philth for armed robbery and in addition Chrissie and Dennis were fantastic characters in their own right.
No one comes close to the greatness of the Watts. Den is the best character EE have ever had, killing him off ten years ago was unbelievably shortsighted and stupid.

They are superb.
NO soap family has ever, still isn't and won't ever be as good!:p
The Watt's are great, and the Branning's are great, but the Mitchell's will always be number 1!:p
They are the most iconic family in soap!:)

You seem a late starter to the show.
The Watts are more iconic I think.
