How do you cook your Veggie's ?

I like to steam or roast them most of the tie the odd occasion I will boil them but not often , .

I was reading an american forum and apparently some people just stick them in the Microwave oven  on the basis that they cook faster therefore retain the goodness .

so how do you cook yours

microwave , steam , roast or boil ?

Boil them, but not for very long. Very few things worse than overcooked, mushy veg.

Most of the time I steam them. Some of the time I steam them in the microwave.

It really depends on the veg. I hate watery courgettes, so only have them roasted or grilled. Whereas I only like broccoli if it's cooked through a soup or sauce. Green beans get steamed in the micro and turnip has to be coated with peppery cornflour and roasted. For the rest, I vary methods that can be do to with the dish (e.g I want the water for stock or I already have the oven on or the timings are tight and I need them ready fast!).

    boil or stir fry

if i boil them i tend to stick them in the pan where my spuds are boiling for different time lengths depending on the veg............eg carrots will go in 5 mins after my spuds, cauli 10 mins, broccoli 15 mins.................assuming spuds will take about 20 mins

Depends what the vegetable is. Things like peas I tend to boil. Spuds, well fry, boil, roast..depends what I'm having. Parsnips I always roast. Carrots I usually boil but sometimes roast. Broccoli I tend to steam or stir-fry. Mushrooms either fry or directly thrown in as part of the meal which I suppose is a crude form of boiling. Asparagus usually gets a quick griddle, as do some of the more watery veg.

It really does depend what meal they're gonna be part of.

Garden peas are the best frozen veg. A couple of minutes in the microwave is perfect for them.

Par cooking potatoes can also be done in the microwave. Also mine is a combi oven and has a jacket potato setting which is good for roasting new/baby potatoes.

Stirfry is always a good option as well as the char gril for some veg.

Can I ask a related question.....when and how do you season your steamed veg? I'm thinking of getting a steamer and hate unsalted veg.

If it's an accompanying dish then I steam them usually.

If they're more of a feature of the meal then roasting with herbs is really tasty.

For me it depends on the dish/cuisine.
For mediterranean it can be a sprinkle of sea salt and a splash of olive oil (maybe also a splash of balsamic).

For Asian/stirfy a splash of soy and/or fish sauce.

I once made a meal for my dad. The veg was green beans cooked al dente.

He took one bite and said the veg isn't cooked :D

I do like green bean casserole which is more cooked through.

I buy the steamed veg bags for the Microwave.
They taste really fresh still and the ease encourages me to eat more vegetables.

I also like them in stir fry. I fancy that now in facts :D

    Just rearranging your post slightly.
I agree. I used to always want some shredded chicken or meat in a stirfry or Thai curry but now prefer them meat free packed with fresh veg and herbs.

Steamed, and then tossed in olive oil and very, very finely chopped red peppers.

Steamed in the microwave but if I want jacket potatoes I prefer them done in the oven unless I'm in a hurry.
