Not going to vote but my top three, in chronological order, are Troughton, Tom Baker and Smith. The only three who really convinced me they were 'alien'.

I hate this assumption that only 'fan girls' like David Tennant and to a degree Matt smith.

    They are both fantastic Doctors.

That would be the fans boys not liking girls playing with their toys.

I agree both are fantastic Doctors.

I'm always torn between Tom Baker, Eccleston and Tennant but usually end up picking Tennant mainly on the diversity of his stories and his performances in series 3-4. Human Nature/Family of Blood usually get the plaudits but for me Midnight is a phenomenal turn by him, absolutely mesmerizing.

    So Tennant for me.

Have to agree Midnight is sensational.

I actually rated it as my fav new Who episode.

No props, special effects, just a small room with a handful of actors and a mysterious enemy that never really gets revealed.

Aw, poor Colin! He's being beaten by Paul McGann! D=

If I had a second vote I would give it to Colin so he'd have one. :(

Peter Davison was my childhood hero, and I still adore him, but Matt Smith has just edged him out for me. Third spot goes to the fabulous Patrick Troughton.

Slightly off topic...I adore Midnight but I don't think its anything like the reinvention of the wheel writing wise that some would paint it as. I suppose for DW and tea time BBC it was fairly new ground but it was a great example of RTD doing a magpie job on various other texts and shows. Brilliantly done all the same. I think its Tennant who really makes it though. His performance holds it all together and is as masterful (ignore the pun) as any in the shows fifty years.

Certainly better than Turn Left. An episode I used to rate but rewatched the other night and found to be utterly dreadful. But that's for another thread and another day.

Umm is there a reason DT is in italics and the others not?

Anyway I voted for the fabulous Tenth Doctor.

You kind of answered your own question. He is only in italics because you voted for him.

Same as Paul McGann is on mine.

For me it's Eccleston. Such a perfect range between the comical and the serious... he could entertain you with his 'daft old face' for ages, and then terrify you at the flick of a switch. He brought real gravitas to the role, I feel. He left most of us wanting more, and the level of talk about his (lack of) involvement in the 50th Anniversary is still very telling of his success.

For context, Matt Smith is a very close second. Absolutely love his portrayal of The Doctor...he is literally everything I imagined The Doctor could be and injected the show with new life after I'd long grown tired with Tennant's domesticated portrayal that was too dependent on interesting companions.

As for beyond that, I am really at a loss to conclude whether I prefer William Hartnell or Paul McGann... both of them were exceptional, if also extremely different. I absolutely loved the recent short episode with McGann and cannot wait to relive the Sixties edge of Hartnell's Who through An Adventure in Space and Time :D

As the first voter in this poll, I was disappointed to see Tom go down from having 100% of the vote to 21.67% (at the time of posting) :D

I didn't know Colin Baker was a member on here, the only other explanation for his single vote is somebody trying to be anarchic!

William Hartnell, solely because he portrayed the first Doctor and without whom Dr Who may not have started.:)

Tom Baker is my favourite Doctor, the pompous and eccentric bohemian who could have some incredibly dark moments. All the contrasts that I like in a Doctor.

if were going by 'my doctor' then it is Paul McGann and really love him but I had to choose between Davison, Pertwee and Tennant as I love them all.. in the end I chose Davison as he was the first 'young' doctor and my favourite episodes of the classic era are The Caves of Androzani and The Five Doctors and Davison was just amazing :D

I think that a Doctor becomes a person's personal Doctor when they have the highest impact upon them. See for me, the first Doctor I got introduced to was Chris Eccleston, and it was weird at the time to see Tennant come in, until of course he absolutely nailed it.

But I don't really consider either of them as my Doctor. Yes, Chris got me into the show and Tennant made me love it, but my Doctor will always be Matt Smith. He's been the Doctor through a very changing 3 years for me, and his episodes are associated with so many memories; I hosted a Come Dine with Me Night for the Eleventh Hour, I sat very hungover after year 13 prom for the Big Bang, I was in London for the Impossible Astronaut, I streamed The Wedding of River Song in a very crowded pub with wi-fi, I steamed Nightmare in Silver in an empty lecture theatre and, on Saturday, I'm going to watch the Day of the Doctor at the Celebration Event.

The beauty with shows like DW are the memories we all associate with our respective Doctor. Matt Smith's Doctor is that for me, and it's times I will not forget. It helps as well that Matt is so bloody good in the role. As he leaves DW, so does my time at Uni end and adulthood begin. So yeah, 11 is mine.

Wow. Deep. Maybe a little too deep... I don't care.

My 'Top 11' in reverse order:
    11. The Ninth Doctor - Christopher Eccleston
    10. The Tenth Doctor - David Tennant
    9. The Sixth Doctor - Colin Baker
    8. The First Doctor - William Hartnell
    7. The Fifth Doctor - Peter Davison
    6. The Eighth Doctor - Paul McGann
    5. The Eleventh Doctor - Matt Smith
    4. The Third Doctor - Jon Pertwee
    3. The Seventh Doctor - Sylvester McCoy
    2. The Second Doctor - Patrick Troughton
    1. The Fourth Doctor - Tom Baker

The top three has stayed stable for years and sorry to say Chris Eccleston has always been bottom (he just never was THE Doctor to me) but 4-10 fluctuates all the time. After Night Of The Doctor Paul McGann has jumped up from 8 up to 6. After Series 7 Matt Smith has rose from 9 up to 5. At one point David Tennant was at 4 but has fallen back down to number 10.
