5th gen iPod touch won't charge

Had this problem for a while, but getting round to getting it fixed
Basically I can plug it in either to a computer or to the wall, and, nothing. I've tried cleaning out the charging port and still nothing.
My options are:
a) Take it to my local apple reseller for a service
b) Take it to a random phone repair shop
What would the techy minded people on here recommend and why? I don't fancy getting lumped with a large bill from apple if an independent guy can fix it for 20 quid.
I suspect the problem is that the charging port has become dislodged from the battery itself.
