Al this, whats the point when you can buy a SIM card in cash without ID lol

We have pretty liberal legislation on this. In Germany for example you need to register it with an address (you can make it up) before you can activate it and in some countries you do need ID to get a SIM card.

ID cards were a good idea. The vast majority of us have one anyway, all the tech and money they spent went into the new photocard driving licences.

I really did not get the hysteria surrounding them at the time.

The problem wasn't the card per se. It was the database behind it and who had access to it. Also people being hassled to see their ID card by the authorities would have been a problem. In fact that was the reason the ID card was done away with post WW2, anyone the police took a dislike to were constantly being stopped to show their ID.

But many other EU countries have ID cards and this is not a problem there. Still meaningless conjecture.

And not having a credible source of who you are and where you live has led to a real problem with identity theft. A utility bill as proof of address? In 2015? Really.....

The database would have been an identity thief's panacea, once they'd hacked the database or some official had left a memory stick on the train with the UK population's details on.

You've also got to remember that access to the database wasn't going to be restricted to a few government departments. Every man and his dog was going to get access.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_Cards_Act_2006#Database_extent_and_access
Home Office forecasts envisage that "265 government departments and as many as 48,000 accredited private sector organisations" would have had access to the database

It would have been about as secure as a leaking bucket.

If the phone companies included mms then for the most I wouldn't need whatsapp or viber but at 30p a pic msg it's too expensive

Whatsapp etc come into their own for international use. Try sending SMS messages to foreign mobiles, or send an SMS back home while roaming, and watch the charges mount up !!!

They were a good idea. Most european countries have them. I can imagine that trying to prove who you are if you don't have a passport or driving licence is a nightmare!!

A lot of European countries have a law about carrying ID on you at all times. As far as I know we don't.

Whats going to happen to VPNs that multinational companies run?

Cameron is going after "encryption" but if he thinks he can get rid of VPNs and get rid of HTTPS web pages, he might as well shut down the entire economy.

    This is not thought through.

Well look how Maggie Thatcher and John Major thought that they could stop porn on satellite that was uploaded in another country. They had no idea that you can't just stop microwaves at the border of this country.

Big ideas from people with little brains.

I understand the argument that the Government are concerned about terrorists using WhatsApp for terror, however are there any actual terror cases that could have been prevented had they had access to WhatsApp?

Put yourself in a terrorist's position: Now if you know that a certain medium is in the clear and read and monitored by the Government, are you going to use that to talk about your masterplan?

So in fact it will stop no crime at all and will just give them the power to snoop on anyone for any reason. Just like loads of laws that have been brought in on the back of and as an excuse for something only to be abused generally to control.

That's a bit harsh. When those two were in power the number of people who had any idea about the Internet could be counted on one hand. Attack their advisors, by all means, but not those two. That's just stupid.

Those two? Yee gads! Are you one of the Tory supporters who thought that Thatcher wasn't the utter monster that she was? Remember her own party got rid of her for a reason you know!

Ever heard of online banking? You do realise that it's encrypted right?

Where in any of the articles on this does it say that all encryption will be banned?

    http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/science-technology/590061/WhatsApp-UK-Ban-Weeks-Snoopers-Charter

It doesn't, they just want to open up messaging services so that the security services can monitor them - not ban all encryption that would mean online banking etc.

Whether this works or not is open for debate - but no where can I see that their target is anything other than online encrypted messaging services
