When I mentioned Modern Rock above, sounding old fashioned / out dated I would iinclude Active Rock, Nu Metal & most definately Mainstream Rock as well. There should be 'specialist' programmes that cover these area of rock on Team Rock {whatever their going to call their radio station) IMO of course.Playing these area's of Rock 24/7 'only' just doesn't really attract largish listenership though.Think Myers is right - they need to play the best of it all.

Someone once said 90% (95%) of all music genres output is basically rubbish - this is as true today than it was when it was first stated.

Something interesting- dewsbury has put his employers as team rock and mentioned editing swearing out of songs. This could be interesting..... In a good way, he is awesome

I might be jumping to conclusions here, but I've just spotted a "Test A" channel on my DAB that may be TeamRock testing their feed. Not 'on-air' when I tried tuning in but I'll be checking back periodically.

Doubt if testing can take place until after 1st May when other stations make space on D1?
    Interesting blog

I follow there facebook page but there are signs that Team Rock Radio becomes a heavy metal/active rock station. So I don't know where all the rumours come from this station becomes a wide variety rock station? The first signs are looking by far from that.

Billy Anderson in the Guardian Apr 3, 2013!
"All rock stations in the UK seem to play the same rock songs. That's fine but we are not a classic rock station. Instead, we celebrate the whole spectrum of rock music. Too many great bands go unplayed.

Rock music is like any other nice music service. The audience is very difficult to serve because the range available is so vast. I expect they will have a wider playlist than any other rock station in the daytime and go heavy on specialist programming at night. Probably the best way forward. All stations have to strike a balance between being different enough to appeal and being broad enough to survive but I am no rock fan.

I like Rock music, not mad on heavy metal, (depends who it is), i just hope the balance is right so its not too screamy during the day time. I like bands like Maiden, ACDC and even Drowning Pool but also like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard etc

Between "talkSPORT" and "The Wireless" but "Test A" has been on for a few months now, plus 2 of them on my radio.

It will be interesting to hear the station when it starts, but I still have doubts it will be a commercial success.

I guess we'll see this coming week but to me it sounds like the station is just following in already well trodden footsteps that planet rock, kerrang!, realxs, The Arrow & absolute classic rock have already walked in, so it's likely to sound like nothing new unless they get the playlist spot on, not too narrow or repetitive but not up its own rock butt like planet rock has turned into, somewhere between The arrow, realxs and Kerrang! Would suit me, maybe with a bit of Xfm's playlist thrown in.. But that could be a bit of of an ask to pull off..

Indeed - I think it'll be hard pushed with such low quality sound quality on DAB.

DAB at 80k mono with new encoders should sound fine if all the settings are good, from rajar figures DAB on mono will get 3 to 5 times the number of listeners online in stereo!

John Mayer knows how to launch stations, If they can buy Real XS they should get 250k listenrs on local FM, plus perhaps the same on digital if they can push using Metal Hammer and Classic rock facebook "fans", magazine and other publicity?

So no reason why it should not be a success if the programmes and music is good, with room still for Planetrock, Kerrang and Abs CR to keep their listeners?

Here's a question. Can Team Rock with it's specialist playlist (check their pictures on Facebook), get more listeners than...

    1. Real XS with 223k
    2. Absolute Classic Rock with 362k
    3. Planet Rock with 877k
    4. Kerrang with 1.28m

I think getting Real xs stations (if the cc approve the sale and the price is reasonmyable) will be important for Teamrock, but it's possible someone like Absolute/Jack, Bauer or another might buy them, which will mean Teamrock will have a harder job (but no impossible) to get established?

Here's a thought for you... bit off the wall maybe, but still an interesting thunk...

Maybe TeamRock ISN'T trying to make the DAB station a huge commercial success? Maybe they're using the radio side of the business to build awareness of their other ventures? If so it only has to make a small profit as it'll be driving the profits from the other branches to their company?

Both Billy and John have said that this isn't a traditional radio business, and that they won't be selling spot adverts, so what's to stop them using some of the promotional time that they do have to cross-promote their other business arms, such as the magazines and events bits, and use the radio station as part of their advertising budgets?

If that's the case, then any FM stations (especially small local ones) are probably not part of the plan...

I assume that was the thinking behind the digital Saga/Primetime stations: target listeners who were also in the market that the core Saga businesses were aimed at. Not sure whether it worked, though.

My feeling is that the FM licenses contain to many restrictions regarding local output that they're not worth the trouble.

But as a Rock fan who listens to the radio, (I know how old fashioned of me!!), going from 128 kbit/s stereo Planet Rock on my hi-fi to a choice of 80 kbit/s mono Planet Rock or 80 kbit/s mono TeamRock simply isn't going to happen for me, and I suspect for a great many other people either.

Yet again Rock fans who want to listen to the radio are second class citizens in this country.

It did not, and became commercial Smooth (under a Mr Mayers) still making a loss having to pay back loans to the Guardian?.
The Wireless is now doing roughly the same subsidises by Age Uk to now promote Age UK's activities!
The Arrowrock and Chill are also subsidised ad free on London DAB and online by licence renewals for Heart and Choice?
Can only assume Mr Mayer and Anderson have a plan for Teamrock which makes it viable without ads, like using spare profits from the magazines?, otherwise ads will soon appear?
