Leaky TV??

Hi all.

I have a slightly strange question about a TV setup. All the TVs in my house (6) are connected through aerial cable that all ends up connected to a booster in my living room. In their a Sky Box, a Tivo and a video player are connected. This allows all the TVs to receive a picture from my main rooftop aerial, as well as Sky, Tivo and the video player - via their RF outputs. The aerial cable is now getting quite old, and I'm sure some of it is quite 'worn out'.

I recently purchased a hand held TV. When I scanned through the channels I received all the normal ones (BBC 1 & 2, ITV, Chnl4 & ?5? etc.), as well as some extras. Both my Sky, Tivo and video seem to be picked up on the portable TV, despite their being no physical connection. This seems to extend to just outside the walls of my house (after only the normal channels remain past there). Also when the aerial is disconnected from the booster all the normal channels seem to have a slightly poorer signal in my house.

How is the portable TV picking up these extra channels, and does this mean their is a problem with my TV system/ cause any problems?

Thanks for any help,
Dan.

    Hmm, I've disconnected my aerial from the booster and my TVs have a poorer signal...I wonder why?

    No, it's not a problem and quite common, just slight RF radiation from the RF modulators within your equipment.

    "Leaky Feeder" is a well known technique for distributing radio frequency signals in a confined area - for example along a road tunnel where a conventional antenna system would struggle to work properly. As the name suggests it is a bit of coax that "leaks" RF energy along it's length.

    Obviously the feeder cable for these kind of installations is carefully designed to "leak" in a controlled manner. But any cable carrying RF signals (or in fact any AC electrical signal) will "leak" some signal. The poorer the screening braid the more signal will radiate. Breaks in the screen obvious exaggerate the effect.

    In the case of your installation the RF outputs from your various bits of kit are stronger than the direct aerial signal so they will be more able to radiate a few feet from the coax running to the various rooms in your house. Not a great problem, unless your granny is living next door and is getting your late night porn on her TV as a result :)

    Changing the cable to something like CT100 grade will help as that has far better screening properties than the bog standard brown coax aerial cable you may well be using at the moment.

    To John Currie;
    'Hmm, I've disconnected my aerial from the booster and my TVs have a poorer signal...I wonder why?'

    :) Ye that sounded a litle silly :o , I ment all the normal terrestrial channels seemed amplified on my hand held TV when in my house.
    Anyway cheers for your advice:D

    To All;

    Thanks for your help, Dan :)
