Do You Recognise The Accent Spoken by BBC Correspondent Lyse Doucet?

Whenever I hear her speak, I am curious as to where she is from, as I don't recognise the accent. It sounds, to me, to be an Irish accent, but her Wikipedia entry says she is Canadian.

Can anyone throw any light on this precise accent?

She's Canadian. I'm guessing that she grew up speaking Canadian & French and may have picked up other accents living in Britain and when based abroad.

Apparently she's Canadian. I've wondered about her accent before and have not been able to place it.

She has a slight Canadian accent I can tell that much. There's definitely a hint of Irish there as well as a standard English accent. Maybe she grew up in Canada with Irish accented family and has spent a lot of time in England?

It's funny, though, there is another BBC correspondent, Barbara Plett, who sounds, to me, to have the exact same accent :eek:

That is what I can hear too. English isn't my native language, but I can distinguish different accents very well and place them in their specific areas.

I find the middle east correspondents have odd accents. Obviously they have been taught or studied English but i'm not sure if it is a developed accent in their own country, or maybe a US school in their country or that they have studied abroad.

She sounds Canadian with an Irish twang. She also sounds a bit like the exaggerated Minnesota accent they did in Fargo.

I thought she sounded dutch. Although those canadians in Fargo are dutch-ish, I think maybe they have scandinavian origins? I love the accent anyway.

BBC Northern Ireland political correspondent Martina Purdy was born in Belfast but grew up in Canada before returning but still has a Canadian accent.

Poppy is lovely but I always assumed she was American.

It's good that news broadcasters have a range of accents and dialects. As long as they are understandable and good at their jobs then I really don't care where they come from.

She's Australian, Adelaide I think. There are quite a few antipodeans at the beeb. The very pretty Yalda Hakim was born in Afghanistan but grew up in Australia and Lucy Hockings is from New Zealand.
