If only there was a category for scenery chewing. Shocking performance that deserved derision, not awards.

    Agreed

the cool thing about threads like this is it jogs ones memory...yes that was a fine and unexpected performance from Williams. He is a frustrating actor, clearly is a talented guy, but all to often saddles himself with mawkish nonsense.

I'm not sure that iconic performances should necessarily be nominated unless the acting was deserving.

well of course , but the point is - it's very rare that someone can create an iconic character that resonates like the ones I'm talking about .

    erm he was nominated....

Philip Seymour Hoffman won for Capote that year, and i think most would argue that if anyone deserved to win over him it was Heath Ledger for Brokeback Mountain....good year for acting performances, as David Strathairn was also excellent in Good Night and Good Luck.

well he has won twice and been nominated on a further three occasions so i don't think he can grumble too much :p

The film wasn't very well received critically which damaged her chances really.

It never hurt Stanley Tucci's chances though as he got one

true, but then he was Stanley Tucci, a guy much respected in hollywood who had never previously been recognised by the academy, which i think does make a difference, whether it should or not.
