What does the sign # mean?

I have noticed on two TV shows that the hash sign is used somewhere in the titles i.e #HIGNFY for Have I Got News For You and in Question Time on Tjhursday, David Dimbleby mentioned the same for 'tagging'.

Can anyone explain, please.:confused:

    It is used on sites like twitter.

    So for instance everything tagged with #HIGNFY would appear in a search for that tag.

    You can tell that DD hates it when he has to mention twitter. It was bad enough for him when he had to mention the red button or the website.

    I bet he wasn't even happy mentioning ceefax :D
