I'm considering buying a new pvr for an elderly relative. Has anyone used the youview system?

how does it compare to the portal say on the humax freeview+ pvr portal?

which is easier to use do you think? does the youview part add complexity for little gain - they mostly use iplayer.

ta,

Stu

The Humax portal is about as much use as a chocolate fire-guard. If your relatives use iPlayer a lot then the choice is simple, YouView.

The HDR is a great PVR and has better functionality over a YouView box. YV is 'locked down' compared to the HDR. With the HDR you can install custom firmware which further enhances it as a PVR. You can even set programmes to record via the Internet if you so wish.

Also note that with the custom firmware, you can also install an 'enhanced portal' which does improve things somewhat.

The HDR portal is very slow.

As an altrenative, these boxes http://www.pulse-eight.com/store/category/58-tvonics-freeview.aspx run well on the latest software. See the Official TVOnics thread.

I find the Youview Humax PVR very easy to use and nicely set out. There are also a few new options for the less-abled.

A few issues cause the power-user headaches but I don't think it would affect your relative.

There is an IOS/android app where you can remotely set timers so if they forget how to do it, you could do it for them!

The Humax T2 HDR accepts the alternative Custom Firmware which significantly extends the PVR's capabilities including control & scheduling via the internet which may be useful if one's supporting a remote relative.
