Just announced that Peter Vaughan has died at the age of 93.

He created such a memorable role of Grouty in Porridge and his performance as Felix in Our Friends in the North is nothing short of stunning.

RIP.

A long career and appeared in so much. Seemed to be in most things in the 60s.

One of my favorite actors. He will forever be 'Grouty' for me. Demanding 'money with menaces'. :D

    RIP Peter.

Its strange when you realise that "Genial" Harry Grout only appeared in three episodes of Porridge, you always imagine it was more than that

Kinda reminds me of Denzil's wife in OFAH, she was only in one episode but felt like more.

Love that film, usually TV programmes don't make good films but what a great movie.

Great actor and in many TV and films. He was good in The Remains of the Day and so funny in Death at the Funeral.

Maybe only man in Game of Thrones who refused the throne of the Seven Kingdoms.

We'll be getting more Porridge on GOLD on Sky I hope? I never really got into Porridge until recent. Never saw or got into it enough when it was on many repeats as a child/teenager.

Sad news. My Mother and Auntie always said that he reminded them of their Dad, who passed 28 years ago tomorrow. I didn't know him for anything other than Game Of Thrones and he was great in that. RIP Peter Vaughan.

Always sad to hear another actor of Peter's generation passing. He has outlived most of the Porridge cast by a long way and that now leaves only a couple of exceptions.

Was just thinking about him only a few days ago as he had been advertised to appear at a film festival next February.

I was surprised to read today he was only in three episodes. As you say he was such a memorable character.

Having said that there were only twenty-one episodes made.

Porridge is the sort of sitcom that if you're flicking through the channel guide for something to watch and you see it's on, you can't help but stop and watch it, even though you've seen them all before. probably many times. It was situation comedy of the very highest quality.

David Jason (Blanco) and Christopher Biggins (Lukewarm) are obviously still with us. Tony Osoba (McClaren) is still alive, aged 69. Sam Kelly (Warren) died in 2014.

David Jason was quite young when he played Blanco, the old lag. Apparently Ronnie Barker suggested him to the producers for the role.

Sad news, loved him in Porridge as Grouty, brilliant actor and a sad loss but 93 is a brilliant age to reach, not many live as long as him, RIP.

Good actor. I saw him in a repeat of the 1960s show, Randall and Hopkirk. Loved him in that.

Also, I dispute he was 93. I looked up his age a few years back and it said born 1920 which would make him 96.

    RIP.

Well, he was on the radio only a few weeks ago (seeming very sprightly and 'with it') promoting his autobiography, and he said he was nearing 94.

But it's very sad news, he really was one of my all time favourite actors, from The Remains of the Day, to Brazil, Fox, Citizen Smith, GoT and Porridge - a truly versatile and very convincing actor.

Talking Pictures channel recently showed an old film with him in the lead - Smokescreen - an unusual whodunnit where he played an insurance man who solves the murder. He was due to appear at a convention organized by that TV channel early next year.

    R.I.P. Peter.

Loved him in Fox, with the wonderful Elizabeth Spriggs as his wife. I have the complete series on DVD, and can really recommend it. His sons were played by Larry Lamb, and a very young Ray Winstone.

Although he was 9 years old than his ex wife Billie Whitelaw, he outlived her by two years.

Who could forget this memorable and menacing scene in the original Straw Dogs (5:20) featuring Peter Vaughan? A great character actor who was at home on stage, fiim or tv, and outlived just about all of the cast of Porridge. RIP
