Player Wages

This isn't a moan about how much the top stars of the game get paid, that's for another time.

I think the top earners are earning around £300,000 or more.

How high do you think the wages will rise to? I heard Man City offered Ronaldo £400,000 a week last year but he turned it down, but he said it did turn his head.

Surely there has to be a glass ceiling. It can't keep rising. Can it?

It's all relative. Wages will carry on rising as long as the money in the game continues to increase. It's hard to say when/if that'll stop. Just look at the movie industry. 20-30 years ago earning seven-figures for a movie would seem outrageous for all but the very top, select group of actors. Now I'd be surprised if Ben Stiller gets out of bed for anything less than $1m.

If SKY continue to pay ridiculous amounts for the rights then the wages will continue to grow.

Yup, its entirely at the mercy of the amount of money in the game. As long as that continues to rise so will the wages and highly so. Makes more sense for the players to get their share than for it to stay in the owners pockets which would be the alternative.

You can close the thread right there because that perfectly sums up the whole thing.

While the broadcasters continue to pay record amounts with each new 3-year deal, then wages (and transfer fees) will naturally continue to rise.

Even simple things no longer matter because they have so much money so as soon as the Barclays deal ends, it'll no longer be a sponsored league because they don't need the trivial amounts it brought in. It'll be known simply as 'The Premier League'.

If the clubs are making increasing profits, it's only natural that the people mking this money will want a share.
Who would have thought someone can earn over £200,000 a week playing football back in the 70's and 80's.

I don't think there is a glass ceiling. The game continues to grow, and the more you get kids from underdeveloped nations into the game, they literally inspire a nation, thus encouraging more kids to follow in their footsteps and compel their nation to latch onto them; buy merchandise, follow them around the world and use word of mouth.

FIFA and football clubs siege on this potential and exploit them: take players to Europe, publicise them, tour in their countries and spread brand awareness = More money.

Also, just imagine the second explosion of wealth from Asia & Australia - That's One billion people there. Wages will sky rocket if they can crack these territories.

The wages aren't really the problem, it's the airtight contracts that are the problem.
