All I have on is a TV, a computer, kettle, microwave and fridge.

I use a printer and have a Sky box plugged in.

But WTF.

Paid the bill today. Disgusting.

There's three of us but my daughter is never in and the house is empty all day and ours was £288.

We get in after 6.30 and are in bed for 11. Our heating and cooking is gas. So really our TV, lighting, fridge, laptop, washing machine twice a week and mobile phone charger are all that's being used. God help people who use electricity to cook with. The cheeky sod at the leccy company said when we queried it "Do you have a lot of mobile phones charging?" :o The annoying thing is the three of us charge our phones at work except for emergencies.

Do you have those things on or on standby all the time?

That may account for the huge bill.

If that is the quarter then it works out around £20 per week.

That's roughly what we pay for a "summer quarter" for two of us,but that iincludes heating and cooking( no gas).

Winter bills can be around £300-£400 a quarter depending on how cold it gets.

The big questions that need to be asked are:
    When was your last bill?
And, When was your meter last actually read? (if they've been estimating for a while it can be massively out when they actually read it, the same if this one is an estimate and the last one was based on a reading).

Also if you've got an electric immersion heater, check it's actually turned off, or on a timer, and not just on all the time.

Do you have a Plasma TV or halogen or incandescent (old style) lights, these are huge energy users. Switching to LED can save a lot, although if you have low voltage halogen (likely in kitchen or bathroom) or use a dimmer switch you'll need to change the transformer(s).

No it wouldn't. I think his metre is wrong, there is a problem or he should change tariff. I've got All they has and more and always leave things on standby and my bills around £50 a month.

Electric bills are a very sore point for me. Energy companies are robbing gits and I'm absolutely dreading my next electric bill.

You paid the bill so presumably you agreed the bill was correct.

You need to cut down on your consumption and/or look at changing supplier.

We get our electric bill twice a year. £250 for six months' electricity is about forty quid a month. A tenner a week. That's dirt cheap.

Well done, OP, on having a very low electricity usage.

(Alternatively, why not give us some indication of whether you receive a bill monthly, quarterly, twice a year or annually so that we can make come kind of comparison with our own electricity usage? )

They shouldn't have paid it but have asked for an investigation.

Just to be clear I have a couple of TVs, three boxes, an entertainment system, fully stocked kitchen including electric stove, printer, wifi, radios etc all usually on standby and my bill is nowhere near that.

Was this bill "estimated" or based on an actual reading?

Was your last bill "estimated" or based on an actual reading?

Check that the meter reading on the bill is roughly the same as that on your meter.

It's largely irrelevant at this stage what equipment you use until you know whether this is based on estimated readings. If you have been underpaying for several quarters, and this is an actual bill then it could be right. If you subsequently establish that you are using £250/quarter of electricity, then it is time to review what is using it.

take meter readings daily and also switch off stuff and see how it affects the load as its amazing how some stuff on standby basically uses the same as if its in use.

I suppose you could always take it up via your supplier's internal grievance procedures and then go here: https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/information-consumers/domestic-consumers/making-enquiry-or-complaint

I'd suggest checking that the bills are accurate meter reading bills and not estimated bills because that's one scally tactic that's used to bring in more revenue.

I pay four fuel bills a year, i.e every 3 months. My last bill was from 15 July - 20 October, and for gas and electric it was for £185.26 in total, including VAT. As I moved in to this house last October, I can see how much it's cost me for 12 months for gas and electric - £993.88. I was hoping for under a grand so I'm pleased. This is for two of us and we're with EDF.
