Hi peeps, lovely to see all the old faithfuls here.
I really wanted to offer my heartfelt thanks to the eminently sensible Dave for the heads up on the brilliant Alan Clayson book, 'Beat Merchants', which charts the history of the birth of British pop throughout the 60s.
I knew I was onto a winner when the first paragraph of the prologue made me burst out laughing, as he tells of celebrating '10 unsuccessful years in showbusiness' and mentions his most significant gig the year before was 'at a fundraiser in an asylum', and wondering whether to spend the net profits of a gig 'on a box of matches or a pair of shoelaces'.
For anyone of 'a certain age' it's riveting reading. I was 11 in 1965 and hadn't heard the name Hedgehoppers Anonymous for about 40 years, but as soon as I saw that name, I started singing 'It's Good News Week' in bed and was amazed to realise that I knew all the words!
What amazed me was discovering that pretty much all the groups and soloists that I thought of as gods at the time, (Peter Noone, Dave Berry, Dave Edmunds, Robert Plant, Dave Dee, Keith Moon etc etc) had actually reinvented themselves and had many incarnations working in youth clubs and village halls before they finally hit the big time.
For anyone interested in 60s music, Alan Clayson captures the mood perfectly - he's gently mocking all the way through, while at the same time showing a warm and abiding nostalgia for those times.
Long day and had to turn a coffee shop into an office after the game with more HC fall-out.

i believe St James's Park is now called "plimsoll shop arena" or some such now.....it was funny when they took the St James's Park sign down within hours it had been spray painted back on the wall and the local news never call it anything but SJP!!!!
