    Some say 20's jazz artist Louis Jordan was the first to rap. who knows?

    I think he was more of a 40s r'n'b artist (born in 1908), so probably an influence on the likes of James Brown.

    I'm not a serious hip-hop fan but some of the music is incredibly creative. Common, for example, can take a sample and make a song that's a lot more than the sum of its parts:
