New lappy

My trusty 6 yr old HP lappy looks like it has given up the ghost so for the last few days Ive been mooching round looking for a replacement sub £400 (the subber the better).

I dont play many games but the ones I did: Civ 5, Oblivion and Skyrim I did so at their lowest GFX level (and in Skyrims case at a sub 800width screen with mods to remove particles stuff).

Currys have an HP with AMD A8 CPU with Radeon R5 Intergrated GFX for £350 http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-15-g092sa-15-6-laptop-black-10011511-pdt.html

but today I noticed this ASUS X552CL-SX037H for £319 with dedicated gfx (GT 710M).

The NotebookCheck website suggested this would play Skyrim waaay better than Im used to, which made me suspicious of why the price of the Asus is so low.
Anyone see a reason why?

Simplyasus.com (or saveonlaptops.com as it's more commonly known as) quite often have laptops cheaper than other retailers so it's nothing to worry about. It's a 2013 laptop as well with a 3rd gen Intel CPU, so the price will probably keep on dropping. The latest models now have the 4th gen CPUs.

I don't play games so if I've got this wrong you'll understand, but checking out the minimum spec for Skyrim on this July 2014 page: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:System_Requirements, it says to buy an Intel Dual Core CPU minimum 2.0GHZ, and the Asus has the dual core i3-3217U CPU which is only 1.8GHz and has no turbo boost to up the speed: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-3217U+%40+1.80GHz

I entered the system spec into the game system checker on game-debate.com and the results showed the CPU to be the weakest link. Looking at the notebookcheck page it says the GT 710M will play Skyrim at medium settings 28.5fps at res 1366 x 768. Looking at other gaming forums the general feeling was that this low end card wasn't any good for Skyrim, although to be fair a couple of gamers said they were fine with it.

Thanks for the reply. Yes Im not expecting to play Skyrim on max res at max settings. As long as it plays decenty. I've got used to playing Civ 5 at 7-12fps - according to one of those benchmark sites I should be able to get 40odd fps. If I get half that I'll be happy:-) Anyway, I ordered it so we'll soon find out what it's like.
