Hand Luggage Advice

I am flying with BA to US next week, and they haven't mentioned the weight restrictions on hand baggage, except that you must be able to lift it into the overhead locker unaided. Is this true?
This was given on the BA website, they have only mentioned size of the handbag. Do they check the weight? I fly only with them, and till now have not had my luggage weighed, but flying to the US for first time.

Also, are you allowed Nail Varnish inside your hand baggage, or must this be put in checked baggage?

Thanks in advance..

I flew BA to Bermuda before and I assume they have the same policy on all transatlantic flights - that's why I'm answering. They did not check the weight of my hand baggage, as long as the size is as stated, you should be fine.

You can't take nail varnish with you in the hand baggage as it's on the list of forbidden items under flammable liquids.

Edit: actually, I'm not sure, but you may not be able to pack nail varnish at all...

I had this this with Easyjet to Germany ,size specification (and only one piece) but no weight .
My problem was I'm under 5ft and couldn't quite reach the overhead locker !
The stewardess had to get her male colleague to do it as she explained that Health and Safety meant that she couldn't do it......... mind you she was very slight herself .

Thanks for your replies, also how generous are BA with overweight luggage? I am allowed 23kgs, but both bags are 2kgs overweight. How much will I be charged extra? It has just given 40 pounds if the bag is under 32kgs, but not just one or 2 kilos extra...

Over weight is over weight and they'll check. The check-in person MAY be lenient depending on the mood they're in, but they're more likely to charge you.

It will be £40 for each bag. It says £40 for between 23 & 32kgs and that's what you are.

For any bag you are checking in that is heavier than the free weight allowance of 23kg (51lb), you may need to pay an overweight baggage charge. Overweight baggage charges are payable at check-in.

Wait wait! No nail varnish in cabin baggage? Is this just BA, or a new thing or something? That's quite important to me!

Not on the banned list but it will depend on the carrier.

Someone on here said hand baggage allowance is upto 23kgs, provided you can lift in unaided...surely this is just speculation?? But saying that, I once travelled with 10kgs and they didn't weigh it...

You can have a heavier bag but you need to pay for the privilege and for the extra fuel comsumption. The company needs to attempt make a profit after all.

Heavier bags are allowed for BA Gold card holders but then these pax have previously spent a lot of money travelling with BA.

Having said that, BA does allow a 23 kg hand luggage (provided you keep within the right bag dimensions). Now that is very generous compared with any other airline I know of. However you will need to lift the bag by yourself on the overhead lockers or push it under the seat in front. The crew will not do this for you.

They have a basket that it "must" fit into to check the size.. I've never known them to weight hand luggage and more often than not they don't check the size either.

OK. I saw your earlier post but couldn't help.

You can put it in the hold luggage.

Slightly off topic, but a few years back I remember a group of English people having a huge row with the check in staff at Johannesburg Airport because they wouldn't let them check in a life size wooden giraffe

Some airlines definitely weigh hand luggage and have an 8 or 10 kg limit.
