Game of Thrones baby names on rise

Bran, Sandor and Khaleesi may not be commonly heard in the classroom yet, but they are all names from the hit TV series Game Of Thrones given to babies last year.

Figures show that while Oliver and Amelia were the overall most common names given to babies born in England and Wales in 2013, parents are increasingly taking inspiration from fantasy films such as Twilight and Thor.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there were 187 baby girls named Arya last year - the same number as called Josephine.

There were also 50 Khaleesis - the same amount as were named Peggy.

There were seven boys called Bran and three Sandors - the same amount of boys that were given the name Malcolm last year.

I'd bet good money there's someone out there who's called their son "Hodor" ..

Personally I think you can't beat 'Number 16 Bus Shelter'.

Can't see many girls being named 'Brienne'.

I'll be honest, when our youngest was due in 2012 we had Sansa shortlisted for a girl. Thankfully we had a boy, I think now that would have been a bit cringeworthy.

Oh, and if you were wondering, he's called Joffrey.

You wouldn't think the sort of people that name their children after people on TV shows could afford Sky.

I see nothing wrong with this, they're all reasonable names to be honest.

    I don't think it's that ridiculous.

Jaime, Arya, Bran, Robb, Catelyn, Petyr, Margaery and Gregor are fine

    Sansa and Eddard are borderline

Sandor, rickon, Hodor, Roose, Theon, Cersei, Tyrion and many others are a bit too much

    All IMO of course

Sansa isn't a terrible name for a girl I suppose. I think Arya is better though.

Just found this in the Independent ..
Thanks to Marvel’s relentless churning out of superhero movies, 13 baby Thors entered the world in 2013 while there were 37 Lokis, named after the former’s adoptive brother and archenemy.

Who in the name of sweet buggery moses calls their child "Loki" ??????

I agree with all those mentioned on the last line except those in bold.

Brienne sounds as though it could be an Irish name that's been around for ages.

    From QI
A Russian family would never call their son "Power Station" or "Industrialisation" because they are girls' names. (In Russian, they are "Электростанция" and "Индустриализация" respectively.) Boys' names include "Combine harvester" and "23 February". Stephen Fry also states that in Ukraine you can name your son "Не вбивай мене батько" (which he translates as "Don't kill me father") but this is a mistake, because it's actually a surname.

At the other end of the scale, the list goes down as far as names given to three babies, such as Achilles, Cecil, Ming and Rick for boys and Beryl, Darwin, Jo and Tracey for girls.

And among the more unusual, names of Harry Potter characters have started appearing in lists - including Draco, Sirius and Bellatrix.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-28799538

I'd kind of like to meet a real life "Ming" I suppose :)

I've never seen Game of Thrones, so to me Sansa means this:

I like most of the the Game of Thrones names, they are interesting and more appealing than Peggy or Malcolm, so why not?

I don't think it's a terrible name I'd have just felt a bit embarrassed at naming a child after a GOT character. Having said that, my eldest daughter is named after an unusually named character in a book lol

Oh, and I unsuccessfully waged a 9 month campaign against my wife to name our eldest son Telemachus after the Ulysses character. On balance Sansa seems like a totally sensible name :D

Isn't Sandy, Scottish nickname for Alexander.?
