This guy directed one of my all time favourite teen movies back in the 80's, Better Off Dead, with John Cusack.
It's one of those movies that tends to get overshadowed amongst the Breakfast Clubs, Ferris Beullers etc...but for me its a little gem
It's quite wild and wacky, very imaginative and with some inspired fantasy sequences, which sets it apart from the standard romantic teen comedy.

I mention this because after making only two movies (this and a somewhat inferior follow up called One Crazy Summer), he is back directing a new movie called Multiplexing, about a town that gets obsessed with a movie premiere that is due take place.
