Done the female, here's the male.

Who are your favourite male vocalists and why?

Sam Cooke - That guy's 'A Change is Gonna Come' is one of the most amazing songs in history.

Marvin Gaye - Just amazing, incredibly soulful

Axl Rose - Love the old classics like November Rain. Full on rockstar.

Ozzy Osbourne - He has this amazing klaxon scream

Billie-Joe Armstrong - I just love anything he sings

Jared Leto - Amazing voice really suits his music.

Michael Jackson - One word. Unreal

Well seeing as I'm currently listening to one of his songs, I'll mention Sir David of the Bowie.

I've always been aware of his singles (Scary Monsters (& Super Creeps)' 'Life On Mars', 'Fashion' and 'Ashes to Ashes' being amongst my faves) and I bought a 'Best Of' CD a few years ago, but I'm now discovering his albums. Love the 'Hunky Dory' album and I'm now getting to know his 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars' and 'Aladdin Sane' albums. :)

So yeah David Bowie, he's one of my fave male artists as he's a superb songwriter and I love his quirkiness. A British legend.

All perform live and all sound great with a full orchestra or just a small set of musicians.

My favourite, hands down, is Till Lindemann of Rammstein. He is the only singer I've found who can do that rockstar shouty thing without making me want to cover my ears. And then when he sings normally he has a really good voice and sounds exactly the same live. Plus he writes all the lyrics himself, which is always a bonus. And he's sex on legs. That's not really relevant to his singing, but I just thought I'd say so anyway. :D

:D:D:D That made me chuckle. :) As previously mentioned Bowie's one of my faves but I don't think he's sex on legs. I won't hold it against him though, ha ha!

Marvin Gaye- my all time favourite male artist and vocalist, he has such a soulful energy and a disply of emotions within his song, the album What's Going On is one of the greatest ever made! and he really took a stance on experimenting with Motownand pushing the envelope of quality Soul music. He is indeed The King Of Soul for me, it's strange that Madonna is my all time favourite female artist and she did for music very similar to what Marvin did with Soul, reinvented himself, grew as an artist and has a back catalogue to be embraced and immortal songs to last generations. A real fantastic man who lead to a tragic end, may he Rest In Peace :)

Sly Stone- Sly & The Family Stone is one of my all time favourite bands, and Sly had a drug fuelled problem within the group but depite this his voice generated some source of different tones and textures and with the bands very cultural and political stance within the Funk and Neo-Soul inspired songs Sly's voice comes as something most edgy and unusual but nevertheless against the grain!bandmate Rose Stone could only match it!

Elvis Presley- NEVER fails to make me dance along or FEEL his songs, there is a reason why he is the most successful solo male artist and his voice has encaptured millions, a very iconic symbol of a musician with one of the most distinctive voices of all time.

Lou Reed- one of the most distinctive voices of Andy Warhol's crafted band The Velvet Underground. Lou may not have the perfect vocalist voice, but his voice had a quality texture that really participated with the faster pacing gritty nature or the satirically mind numbing nature of his songs, he is a quality singer and if you haven't heard the album Transformer...you NEED to check it out!

Lindsey Buckingham- Fleetwood Mac's stunning male singer just has such a haunting layer to his voice that matches fellow female bandmates Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie. Go Your Own Way is an example from the sensational album Rumours of why he is one of my favourite all time vocalists from one of the greatest rock bands ever established!

Mick Jagger- The Stones wouldn't have had their success if it weren't for the voice of Jagger also with his song writing craftsmanship alongside Keith Richards to create some of the most iconic British rock anthems ever created! Jaggers raw energy is displayed and it really does show how a song can elevate you and bring you in.

Damon Albarn-the genius behind Gorillaz and lead vocalist of super Britpop group Blur, his voice enchanted my childhood and really presents himself as a vocalist who plays to many strengths and weaknesses and vulnerability which createst a magestic atmosphere. His voice is also very distinctive and live when he also has to interact with cartoons as well as give high energy performances renders audiences in just awe! one ace singer.

Freddie Mercury- while i may not be a 100% Queen fan his voice is such a mesmerising energy displayed that no matter what song he performs on it really does require the listener's FULL attention, that pure high voltage vocal adrenaline makes him one of the finest vocalists in British history and he is missed.

Brandon Flowers- The Killers ensured great success through Flowers' haunting and edgy vocalisations and even with a solo career starting it shows no loss of the magic!

Andi i would be an idiot not to include Michael Jackson! just energetic, frenetic and a layered control to his voice which basically defied gravity! even when he wasn't at his best he entranced audiences, which just shows you. Again, he will be missed.

They are my all time favourites but of course there may be some missing i like too :)

Nice thread - I temd to prefer male voices to female voices anyway.

    In no particular order.....

    Kurt Nilsen
    David Coverdale
    Nat King Cole
    Luther Vandross
Chester Bennington (manages to sing like an angel or a demon - whatever's required)
    Steve Perry (original Journey singer)
    Caleb Followhill
    Leon Jackson
    Iva Davis (Icehouse)
    David Bowie
    Tom Jones
    Eddie Vedder
    Neil Diamond
    Sting
    Bono
    Danny O'Donoghue (The Script)
    Glen Campbell
    Brian Kennedy

In all cases, it's all about the qualities of vocal tone for me.
