Rette die Million! (The Million Pound Drop Germany) won the ratings for the day with 4.8 million viewers. It seems that Germany was on the whole divided by choice, but it was Valentine's Day.
10%/3.24m really isn't good for a TV show. On Sunday nights on the same channel, the drama 'Tatort' regularly pulls in over 7m viewers.
You can't compare the two!
Tatort is an institution in Germany, people plan their evening around it. Also, it's been going for over 40 years, and I wouldn't mind betting that a lot of those 7m viewers have been watching it since the beginning
Whereas USfM is a pop concert aimed at people who are probably more used to downloading it to watch later, than sitting down in front of the TV with their family in an evening.

USfM was a flop just like previous NF's in Germany. I'm pretty sure ARD were expecting much better numbers for the show considering the money and effort gone in to producing it.

The thing that will bother them more than the overnight viewing figures (for which I still maintain they were good for the type of show and target audience), will be full figures including watching online, which will come out in a week or two, and sales figures of the songs involved - if the record companies don't see a big bump in sales for the artists, then they'll be less interested in doing it again next year.
Also ARD must have made quite a lot of money from ticket sales to help pay for the cost of the venue and production, they must have sold at least 9/10 thousand tickets going by how full the arena looked and tickets where about €30.
How strange that as Melfest seems to be going through a transition from the old guard towards a newer and younger generation it is recording the best ratings figures in it's history. I know Loreen's win will have drawn some to watching to see what comes next, but they must like what they are seeing as they are hanging around.
Personally speaking I am getting very little enjoyment from the show this year. Maybe it's growing away from me.........

You might want to read scandipop's thoughts on this, they made some very pertinent points I thought.
Melfest has definitely changed beyond recognition in a very short space of time. It's strange to think that the likes of Sanna and Linda B were still winning semifinals as recently as 2011.

Maybe it's not just the acts they want different but perhaps songwriters who enter similar things year in year out.

That's a very interesting article.
Personally, I haven't got a problem with newer and more different styles in MelFest. The problem I do have is that the songs just aren't very good. There's nothing really outstanding about them.
I disagree about the increase in viewers (both last year and this year) being because of the singers/songs. I put that down to the fact that the actual TV production was refreshed compared to how it had been. MelFest feels much more fun and lively now mainly because the audience in the arena is closer to the action (catwalks, audience close to the stage, greenroom right at the heart of the arena etc.). All you have to do is compare this year's MelFest to 2011 and how drab and lifeless it was that year. The changes they have made have had quite an effect on the show.

I'd put it down to the hype of them picking a winning song last year and the build-up to hosting in May.
Eurosong 2013 was watched by 630,000 viewers on RTE1 (would equate to an audience of around 8.5m in the UK).
Third most watched show of the last week on Irish TV and just behind last night's edition of The Voice Of Ireland, which is proving a big ratings winner.

So, 3.24m wasn't at all bad.

I'm surprised 2008 wasn't a big higher given Carola was in it.
