HD audio controller issue

Helping my son sort the audio out on their new PC...

PC connected to a Denon amp via HDMI, all works OK until they change source, i.e want to watch Sky, because when they switch back to the PC input all sound is lost, volume icon has a red line across it and the HD audio controller states it can't start, restarting the PC brings the audio back and everything is working again.

Tried reinstalling the driver even though it says it was up to date, even tried connecting the PC directly to the TV but audio is lost when changing the TV's HDMI inputs.

Would downloading different software be an option, say something from another manufacturer which is compatible to the operating system?

Any help would be much appreciated.

So you are using the computer's HDMI out for audio only; not video?
Is this a usual way of doing things? I'd have thought it better to connect it to the amp via the proper audio outs, either analogue or digital?

Sounds to me the computer is disabling audio via HDMI when it doesn't sense a connection.
There's probably a way to force it to use HDMI audio at all times, but someone else would have to advise on that.

As above, it's a common problem.

There is a utility which keeps the HDMI connection 'alive' but I can't recall the name just now.

Using the HDMI out for audio and video, video gets passed through the amp, audio is decoded by the amp. HDMI required for HD audio....

I would say if you want the amp to do the video switching and audio and you can use HDMI then this would be the preferred way.

Losing the connection was my first thought, but then I would have thought video would have been lost too.

I'll tell my son to look out for a setting to enable HDMI at all times as they search for a solution, could well be something as simple as this...

Does the computer have a headphone output/built in speakers? If so it is quite possible that these are being used as the default sound device. So when it decides the HDMI is not connected it switches back to this. Quite why it then doesn't switch back is anyone's guess. :)

You could try setting the HDMI out as the default device (has to be connected and working to do this) and see what happens.

You might want to try posting on a forum which specialises in PCs used for AV use

After doing a bit of searching on the Intel site it does look like its a known issue, an update on BIOS and/or reinstall of an older driver seems to fix it, son will give it a go tomorrow.

    Thanks for the interest......

Just an update in case anyone else suffers the same problem...

Did a BIOS/driver update but to no avail, found out it was Win7 and the auto detect, feature which can not be disabled, a way around it would be to fit an EDID emulator, but they are costly. We decided to buy a sound card with optical out, now everything works as it should.....finally :)
