ipod shuffle 3rd gen charger query

OK. So I have the original shuffle but accidently broke the charger. I went to the apple store and bought a new charger. I plugged it into theipod and usb and absolutely nothing happened. The new charger fits the ipod, but could it be that the charger is not backwards compatible. Or is my ipod screwed?
