Love this genre and have read the vast majority of the authors others have suggested but want to add these 2 and their protaganists.
Dennis Lehane's Boston private investigators, Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro - http://www.dennislehanebooks.com/ Robert Crais' Pike and Cole http://www.robertcrais.com/novels_order.htm |

Jo Nesbo books, set in Norway, brilliant and slightly less political than Stieg Larsson. John Sandford's Lucas Davenport books set in Minneapolis, USA are decent crime procedurals. Michael Connolly too with his Harry Bosch series of books.

How have you been getting on with the recommendations so far?
I have now finished all the James Patterson's and I would now take back my recommendation for those - the first in the series are terribly written and whilst they do improve I just think there's much better stuff in the genre to read! I can still heartily recommend Stieg Larsson, Jo Nesbo, Karin Slaughter and Val McDermid though

Have loved some of the suggestions so am still keeping an eye on the thread.
My mum loves murder mystery stories where the person solving it is a chef or similar and they come with little recipes etc. There is a name for this sub genre but it escapes me, anyone any recommendations? These are her favourites http://www.murdershebaked.com/books.htm |

I've recently discovered Mo Hayder - first one I read was Hanging Hill. It's pretty dark and a bit stomach churning but I loved it.
It lead me to start on her other books - not got far yet but have just finished the first in her 'Jack Caffery' series (Birdman). Lots of twists and turns, and very gruesome! I loved it and ordered the rest of the series when I was still only half way through. |
