No, just like the millenium wasn't really 2000 but 2001.

So technically the year 2000 was still part of the 90s?

This debate happened the other day.

Technically/mathematically the new decade does start in 2011. But, nowadays we group the decades differently in a more sensible fashion.

I'll be calling it twenty eleven.

    Indeed on all counts.

Quite clearly the new millenium was celebrated at the start of 2000 so logically the second decade of that millenium should be considered to have started at the start of 2010 unless the first decade lasted 11 years.

Until you get to 2010 it's debatable what was the most sensible way to say the year and less of a mouthful, but from then on twenty whatever surely makes sense and ties in with how we have historically said years..

To me this year is twenty ten and it will soon be twenty eleven.

What a famous year that a thousand and sixty six was :D

If you call it the "tens", then it has to include 2010 as well. But that's cultural, not exact.

nineties, eighties, sixties, fifties, forties, thirties, twenties. The next in the sequence must be the tenies - if we're going to accept the noughties.

Like a person reaching the centenary, these years are the teenage years of the 21st century, well, from 2013 on].
