My first time EVER watching this show. Don't know why I've never watched it as I absolutely LOVE Escape To The Country, Homes Under The Hammer, A Place In The Sun, and Grand Designs. Was actually alright and I can't wait to see all these repeats a previous poster mentioned!! :D

I would love to have known the financial circumstances of the wealthy couple.

They didn't seem to need either the money from the mother or, I suspect their own house. I think the voiceover said that they moved in 8 weeks later which is pretty quick for putting a house on the market, finding a buyer and getting to completion.

I am a nosey so and so .

This is what pisses me off about this programme.

They just want Kirstie and Phil to find them an expensive place, then get it for as cheap as possible.

Isn't that what all housebuyers want?

Couple last night where almost a parody of the typical house buyers on this show, when they where in that huge annex and the wife said it was still too small, what was she expecting a mansion or something.

I was curious about that too. Although the house they bought was lovely I must admit that living in the middle of nowhere in a place that big doesn't appeal to me.

There are parts of London were a million quid will hardly get you a 2 bed flat without any outdoor space.

I watched escape to the country today and they did buy a house! Was most surprised. It was lovely though.

There are also parts of London where prices are so overheated that it surely must crash and that will cause a bloody big bang across the whole house ownership world. It just does not make sense that a small three bed terrace house in an undesirable part of East London can be worth £250000+ and presumably still go higher. There is a natural ceiling and most normal houses in London have already breached it.

The property market in London is independent of the rest of the country and obeys its own rules. Most of the money coming in is from overseas as a safe investment. If you are Russian, Libyan or Chinese and have a few million dollars splashing around then one of the safest places in the world you can put your money is in the London property market - well away from your home government, mafia, family or anyone else who might try to get their hands on it all.

I would accept that mafia money might be fuelling high end property prices but not mid terrace 3 bed 1930s houses with no off street parking or 1 room bed sits in Southwark

Would love to see them have a real challenge and tackle the low end of the market, can't help feeling they have it easy with the budgets and would be nice if they really had to try harder for a change.

Isn't that what all housebuyers want?

Kirstie and Phil take it to the extreme, with ridiculously low offers, followed up with "this is the best they can go for".
I've seen some offers go in at wholly unrealistic low prices, but as it's K and P, they manage to secure it.

Kirstie also says "hassle your conveyancer on a daily basis."
We have a friend in this business. He says "gee thanks Kirstie", through gritted teeth.

Hahaha; I understand. In my working life, I dealt with probate matters, including, naturally, the sales of houses. I lived in fear of the agents coming on the phone to say "we've got Phil and Kirstie here wanting to make an offer...." :o:o

    (I'd sooner take a call from HMRC :D )

Exactly. When a charity was the beneficiary of a house we had to get a separate independent certificate of value (that's WE, as in not the charity); that would soon scupper P & K when told to clear off and not be so silly.

I'm also waiting for somebody on Homes under the Hammer to say "we told Phil and Kirstie we wanted a project so they sent us here"

To be honest I only watch it for the scenery and because Phil and Kirsty are soulmates and I love their banter.

All this 'wow factor' and 'light and airey' plus the now-phrase 'forever home' (until we renovate it and sell it on for a fat fortune) do my head it.

But just because the budgets are high doesn't make it easy. Looking for a £400k house in London is probably harder than trying to find a £100k house in Birmingham.

Surely if they secured the property then the offer wasn't 'wholly unrealistic' was it?

The used to do more starter homes in the early years but they seem to have moved more towards "property porn" and featuring horrendous couples who want to be on TV rather than people who actually need help.

I was thinking more along the line of I have £50,000 cash and don't want a mortgage, there are places to be had but that is quite a challenge. :D
