    Back to the OP...

They seem to forget that Cheltenham is in their area - except for when there's a chance of a freebie for the Gold Cup...

Cheltenham is covered pretty well by BBC Points West.

Transport is a major subject on South Today (and Meridian)

I find it pointless to watch anyway, as many of the stories are not relevant to me. I live in Bournemouth, so I don't care what's happening in Reading or West Sussex etc.

I'll take your word for it, as I can't get it in Cheltenham...it's not available on Freeview, while ITV West Country news is...

Every night? But then again, important stories like Staffordshire, or the proposed rejig of hospital services by the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust across its area (affecting A&E, Paediatrics & antenatal services as well as what surgery and specialist care is offered where) do need to be covered, whether it's seen as boring or not. To many people affected, they are very important issues.

Of course, being local, there is only so much "new news" to report, so there will be slow news days.
Possibly not every night, but we have another one tonight!

I wonder what Bob Warman makes of today's lightweight Central News compared to that of 20-30 years ago?

I had forgot about Bob Warmen when I lived in Nottingham and he only re appeared on my screen when I moved to Worcestershire!

Central news is so poor compared to 20 years ago and some of it isn't live. If you flick between East and West Midlands versions, then you will see Warmen and co doing both programmes with different backgrounds.

I did see that report on the Staffordshire Police Officer presented by the aptly-named Liz Copper!

Northern Ireland- Bombs, Drugs bust, school kids go viral with video, some throwback to the troubles and politicians saying something racist/sectarian/homophobic. Oh! riots too. Along with local business and sport

East Midlands Today is so awesome we need two presenters to hold it all altogether.

    It keeps him employed....

Before the rebranding of regional services to ITV News (Region)... Bob used to say on any short bulletins he presented as "this is ITV News for the he Central Region", so he actually was the only one to say that. That was quite a few years before the rebrand anyway.

Talking of Uncle Bob, anyone remember 'Newshound' from 1982 with Bob & Oscar the dog, plus his co-presenter who later did time, I seem to recall, for sexual offences?

Same with the two West Country versions, same presenters, one version with Clifton Suspension Bridge, the other with the Tamar Bridge...the other week they got confuddled, so we had the Plymouth background up here for a few minutes :-)

Dr David Gregory is from memory, Science & Environment Correspondent.

Peter Pilsner is Transport & Business Correspondent.
(He got the business gig when the previous one left to work for Land Rover Pr!)

Only other single subject correspondent I can think of, is Satnam Rana, who is the Arts and entertainment.

(Previous holders of that position were famously Ashley Blake & less famously, Lindsey Doyle!)
Yes. My point was they will have more reporters and/or specialists. So the post I quoted was kinda stupid.

I was surprised earlier that Look North didn't mention Claudia Lawrence as it was already being reported on the website.

They've covered that case a lot in the past.

I'm really surprised with all the BBC cuts that they are not going to do something similar to what ITV have been for several years. They could save millions as long as the actual content is still there*.

*. Something ITV have not fully achieved with all their cutbacks.

Look East is obsessed with anything and everything Cambridge!

I swear if someone so much as sneezed in Cambridge, they'd send a news crew, as it happened in Cambridge, so we all must be interested!!

Nuclear war could break out in say Peterborough, Luton or Milton Keynes and it wouldn't get a mention - Northampton is the only town they like reporting from when Cambridge is quiet.

The alternative round here is BBC London News, for whom the world ends when you leave Zone 3 on the underground, never mind places beyond the M25! :D

Aren't Cambridge stories good value for both BBC and ITV as they can be shown on both east and west sub-regions?

That would seem to be a good deal, pus Cambridge is the only place that is "local" to everywhere else in such a huge place as the Anglia region. Its also quite newsworthy and can readily produce articulate people to speak to camera.

I always thought the "Lookout East" segments on Broken News were a well observed take on the local news. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaZoGv7zOTU

Possibly. They also sneak quite small places like Saffron Walden, Bishop's Stortford and Harlow in as often as possible as these areas can be labelled as 'Essex' and 'Herts' and shown on both editions. Stansted is another good filler. While most TV aerials in those towns face London, not Sandy Heath or Sudbury!

Interesting. I live 25 miles from Cambridge, yet have no interest in the city, what goes on there or its annoying MP's opinion who seems to be on local TV more than in Parliament.

Milton Keynes I would prefer to hear more about than bloody Cambridge!

Do people in say Cromer, Clacton, Dunstable or even Peterborough really have much affinity with Cambridge stories?

I used to live in Nottingham but my TV aerial faced Sutton Coldfield :)

I remember back in the days of Michele Newman and Llewella Bailey alongside Bob the programme was only ever called 'Central News' without ever referring to the 'West' unlike the editions from Nottingham & Abingdon who always added 'East' and 'South' respectively. Bob always opened with 'Central News, Good Evening'. Maybe that came later, adding ITV?

I guess when he finally retires, ITV could just pack up any local news from the Midlands. Bob's old school but a good presenter

At BBC London we only have two specialist correspondents - one does cycle lanes, and the other does the retelling of national news items that you've just seen on the main bulletin as if they're local to London.

We do have a different weather girl for each day of the week though.

You forgot to mention the Boris Johnson Correspondent who only does stories that show the mayor in a favourable light and therefore does not require any tough questioning of him. Isn't the Olympic Games correspondent still active although he's not been on the air for a while:D

They renamed him - he's now "our Olympic Park Legacy Correspondent". He still files a bi-weekly on-site report - usually documenting the installation of a new park bench or the erection of a special graffiti wall for the benefit of "local community artists" :D

Well when Richard Whiteley and Marylyn Webb were hosts of Calendar, Calendar was streets ahead of Look North, now Calendar is just a shadow of it's former self it cannot fight back so I suppose they can afford to have a dig.
It was good in those far off days. Never watch Calendar now, it's always Look North.

Marylyn Webb sadly died earlier this month.
