Thanks for the video OP I love Tim Minchin man is a genius

But best Hallelujah of the ones I have heard are
    Rufus Wainwright
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMrZ7lChK-g
(also check out his version of Cohen's Chelsea Hotel No2 best cohen cover ever imo)

and of course THE deffinative cover by Jeff Buckley which is untouchable.

Alexandra Burkes is one of the poorest by quite some way.

    Rufus Wainwright for me...

Although I like Alexandra Burke I hated her version of the song. It was clear she was just belting out and not taking a blind bit of notice of what she was singing.

She was probably told to do it that way though....

What was awful was in some 4Music interview was Alexandra saying she tried to 'Whitney-fy it'. I'm all for the divas but that really is a song you don't 'whitney-fy'! I mean really! I will admit, however, that since it was first released, the ending has grown on me (ironically, perhaps the most diva part)

Me too. My only fault I can find with it is that there isn't NEARLY enough of him.

I really like this one! I'd love to hear a studio recording. :) This girl is a seriously underated artist.

(She was an American Idol semi-finalist a few years ago, if your wondering)

No. I'm not keen on "his version" at all. He's stopping short on some notes that would be better if they lasted longer. He is good, but I wouldn't buy what he sang there though. He was too casual with it. I have a feeling that if he'd been really concentrating, this might have sounded a whole lot better. When you sing that kind of song just right and with just the right voice, it can sell loads of copies.

Leonard Cohen's many different versions are superior to any of the covers IMO.

Well, after hearing all of the versions/singers in these videos, none of them can match the preciseness of Alexandra Burke's version. In my opinion, Alexandra sings this song just right. Her "variations" of her voice are always up and down which means that the songs she sings sound great. Some of the versions in this thread sound good, but there's no variation there, in other words, they're kind of a bit flat as well as being good.

The Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris one for Haiti was really good.

I don't think anyone beats the original though.

Nah. That does nothing for me at all. Their voices clash when singing together. I've just listened to the original and ..... are you joking? The original's horrible. It sounds like a flaming country song that's too slow and jazzed up too much. I guess I'll have to disagree with you on this.

I liked Diana's version a lot. Hallelujah always suits well to the more "different" voices.

Oops I didn't mean the original, I meant Jeff Buckley. lol I forget that it wasn't his. He was that good. But I still like the one I linked.

Whitney would have still sung the song with the proper emotion and maturity and understanding of the lyrics required.

Alex's version is a total abombination and easily the worst thing to ever come out of the X-Factor, even though Overcome is a favourite album of mine.

I'd like to thank the people of this forum for introducing me to the Tim Minchin version. I've always quite liked his voice and its a really sweet version, it'll never be my favourite, that slot is already filled by the Kate Vogele and Jeff Buckley versions.

As for the diva-fying thing, I reckon that it can be 'diva'ed but it would require something spectacular and whilst I do like Alexandra on occassion and admit she has a good voice, I'd rather hear a Leona version (which whilst some would argue is just as bad, there is something about Leonas emotional ability that would just strike me more, you know)

Which is the whole point, your favourite version of hallelujah should be the one you connect with the most!
