Farage won't be happy. He's can no longer be the first ukip mp.

    No great surprise.

Presumably he's going to have to cross the floor and sit among the opposition.

He's been flirting with UKIP for ages, I'm surprised it's taken him this long to defect. Idiot.

He's blabbering on about right to recall. Is he going to stand down and fight a by-election or are his constituents stuck with someone elected under a different flag until the next election? Yes is the answer, so at least that is doing the decent thing.

Anyway, he's said he will resign his seat and stand for re-election so we have the fun of a by-election to come.

Most of the UKIP are right wing ex-Tories.

Carswell announces he is to resign his seat and stand for UKIP in the resulting byelection.

Makes you wonder how many more harbour similar thoughts. I doubt it will start a deluge of exits. But it might persuade a few about the posibility of an electoral pact between parties and ukip

    He's resigning and fighting a by-election.

Fair enough and I think with it being a by-election he could well get through. Whether they choose him again in 2015 is a very different matter, though..

You'd better believe that the tories will now unleash the forces of hell.

He didn't even tell David Cameron in advance... who must be furious.

I should think Cameron is thrilled. Carswell has been a thorn in his side for a long time.

Another thing he has to worry about is that he now has a future leadership challenger. Carswell is a very bright chap and pretty good in the media. He just has never been in the mainstream of the Conservative party.

The last time we had a smear campaign against ukip the public saw right through it and they won the eu election.

What's Carswell's chances of regaining his seat for UKIP? I imagine he thinks he's in with a chance and if he does, then Cameron won't be too happy.

Blimey! So I suppose they now officially have their first MP although as much as I despise UKIP at least he has had the decency to say he is stepping down and will seek re-election in a by-election.

EDIT: Sorry didn't see the other thread. Mods, can this please be merged in to the other one.

The Tories surely won't be stupid enough to attack Carswell? They'd effectively be attacking their own grassroots.

He has a 12k majority last time. So pretty good.

If he is re-elected for UKIP, a lot of Tory MPs could be worried about their own seats. Could trigger more defections.

Should be a pretty safe hold for him. The only hope the Conservatives might have is to dispatch Boris.

There'll be more pressure on Cameron to seek an election pact with UKIP. The trouble is it would be an embarrassing u-turn after he dismissed them as fruitcakes.
