I like dogs but the scene at the end of the first episode didn't bother me, it's not real and it's just part of the story.
I'm kind of having the same problem with this as I did with the show 'FlashForward' after the event happened I'm slowly losing interest. But I will try and stay with this.
Did the Sheriff lose anyone during the disappearance?
I can't remember if this is in the pilot or the second episode, so just in case;
His wife joined the people dressed in white, his daughter turned into a moody depressed angry bitch (so a typical teen I guess) and his father, who is in relationship with the mayor, effectively his boss, went crazy - although I'm not sure if he went crazy before of after people vanished.
...so I'm guessing the reason he's always so pissed off is because he was left behind.
I watched the first ep yesterday and it was all a bit... odd. I will give the next episode a go though.
For those who have seen more episodes, do they contain as much sexual content as the first? I was watching with my parents and it was all quite awkward.:D
EDIT: Did anyone else honk when Gary Busey appeared on the TV?

I watched the second episode from on demand over the weekend and there's no nookie in it at all, so you're quite safe

I wouldn't worry. Your parents have had you, so they will be pretty up to speed regarding sex.
The premium subscription cable channels in the US (HBO, Showtime etc) have no restrictions on swearing and sex scenes (no porn obviously).
The basic cable channels (FX, TNT AMC) have tighter restrictions on the swearing and sex scenes, although they seem more relaxed on the violence & gore (Breaking Bad, American Horror Story).
Swearing on mainstream US TV is virtually a no-no (although some recent shows are pushing the boundary).
Correct me if i am wrong US posters.
Swearing and sex on TV doesn't bother me one bit and I think you'd have to be a bit of a prude for it to. I always find the American attitude to swearing really bizarre, you've got stuff like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Ray Donovan, Dexter etc that all contain a fair bit of swearing and then you've got the likes of Prison Break, 24 and The Walking Dead that have none. As you said, it tends to be down to what channel they're on but I've always thought it a bit silly as if I was in an extremely tough prison, battling terrorists or fighting zombies I'd probably be swearing a fair bit. It just doesn't quite ring true when you've got someone getting seriously hurt in one of the roughest prisons in the world and they're going "Oh gosh, that smarts a bit". OK, that's a bit of an exaggeration but I think it makes my point.
Disclosure: Yes, I've watched all of season 1 so must bite my tongue on many questions, although re: nookie, the only other scene I recall was the second last episode. Stick with it, I loved it.
Re: The guilty remnant's motivations, since the book's publication there's been a GR site that links to the author, Tom Perotta's own site - I don't think it could be classed as a spoiler, so if you're puzzled by them, this is it:
The writers make it up each week as they go along.
The book came out in 2011, and season 1 follows it's events very closely, with some character changes. They acquired the TV rights before any follow-up was published, and Tom Perotta is co-writer now, so chances are it'll follow or be influenced by whatever intended arc he had.
Firstly I'd like to say that I love the swearing, sex and violence in Game of Thrones. It tells me that however obscene, violent or sexual the scene is, anything can happen. I also commend HBO for catering for a more adult audience.
But this show seems almost formulaic in its swearing as if there should be n number of F words per minute and they seem to be crowbarred in as opposed to coming naturally.

Got to be said that last night bored me stiff. It has no direction or indication of travel, just a load hashed together nonsense. It almost is an example of creative writers taking the rise out of desperate viewers wanting something different.
With the many assurances, I'll persevere in hope of a hook very soon.
I found ep 2 boring as well, I asked hubby if he wanted to stick with it, and he thinks we should as we have now made the commitment, lol so I will watch next week, but I think it may up like under the dome, the same thing each week with no end or excitement.

Thank you! I was struggling to concentrate on the plot while trying to remember where I had seen them before!
You might have also seen them in 'Teen Wolf' as well.
2% of the population disappear and at the same time those left behind are all turned into unlikeable arseholes...........
I get the feeling it is because they are 'unlikeable A-holes' that they were left behind.
There is a bit of a trick answer to that question.;-)

I'm afraid that it's lost me.
I honked.
