Sitting with a black screen for ages! I'm going to persevere though and not touch it!
What a pain. I have read quite alot about people (usually with laptops) solving their blank screen problem by temporarily connecting another monitor (or even a TV through HDMI). Turns out Windows may actually be working (or still installing in the background) but can't be seen because the display isn't working due to a driver/resolution issue. Once they've actually been able to see the screen they can sort the problem out by installing updates/drivers etc. It's the sort of thing you can imagine happening to a AIO PC too but I don't know if you're able to connect anything to test this.
If you're still having problems I would at least try Safe Mode to see if that does anything.
This morning sitting at the personalise screen, with wired keyboard and mouse, click to enter PC name - not able to enter anything. I've clicked next anyway and am just waiting.
I rebooted, hit f8 for my life! Came up with options, selected (with mouse - so it must work) advanced options. I selected option 4 - safe mode (with f4 key - so keyboard bust also work).
It just seems to be the end part of the install process which there is something wrong with.
I've not told my other half I've tried a clean install yet - and that windows 7 is no longer there as an option! It's now been a week without the PC.
Have you got an ethernet cable connected or wireless adapter installed for Internet connection/home network? You could try removing those in case it's that causing it to hang. Probably not but may as well try.
I used the upgrade offer and installed Windows 8 on a brand new solid state drive, it didn't require a previous install of Windows 7 on it before it would install. Simply download the update and instead of installing it then and there, it gives the option of creating an install DVD or USB drive for future use. Just do that and then off you go. A clean install of Windows 8 on any HDD you like.
So having a look at that link from Annie, it's a screen driver issue with the Touchsmart screens. The updates are happening but the screen needs refreshed to see what's happening.
I'm going to follow the suggestions to see if I can do it. Working late tonight and a long day tomorrow so it may not be for a dat or so before I can try it
Ok, so an update - I have concluded the wireless keyboard and mouse are working fine. I followed some steps from Annie's link and as far as I'm aware I have windows 8 installed.
The problem is the video driver isn't working so not refreshing the screen hence although it looks like its not working it is, it's just the screen isn't showing me what is there correctly. I can see a log in screen ( when putting it to sleep with the keyboard and pressing any key after ).
So the question now is how do I install the most up to date driver?
Well, after 15 hours today of surfing solutions, trying, retrying and pulling my hair out, I have Windows 8 running!
How did I do it - well, with links from Annie - I realised that my pc had indeed installed W8 but the video driver for the Touchsmart wasn't compatible. So, following another forums recommendations it was all guesswork with where windows had opened and using headphones and narrator to speak me through on screen what I was selecting I disabled drivers and hey presto I have it..
Ive installed updates (expect for the video driver) and wont restart until I have music re-installed. Ive also set a restore point...just in case!!!!!

I kind of did say that in post #31 but I suppose a second monitor may not have helped and not everyone has access to one anyway. Using narrator is a clever solution, I would have never thought of doing that.
I admire your perseverance and I hope you think Windows 8 was worth all that trouble .

I'm glad you stuck with it and my links pointed you in the right direction
Have fun with windows 8 it is great, I'm even getting a surface pro and a Nokia Lumia 620 (though it about time to enter the smartphone age ) to complete the set
Hope you didn't waste too much on the wired keyboard and mouse, it's always a good idea to have a set available for emergencies

OK, using a wired USB keyboard seems to be your best bet then.
If you're still having problems I would at least try Safe Mode to see if that does anything.
Could you post a smaller image? That one is far too big
Thanks, not had to go to that menu yet nice to know what it look like now.
