After some advice please regarding laptop download speed.
Just got a new Windows 8 laptop which using speedtest gets a maximum of 36mbps download and 14mbps up.
My daughter has a Windows 7 laptop which gets 54mbps down and 14mbps up.
I've not tried via a wired connection just yet so just wondered if anyone might have any thoughts as to why there's such a difference?

Both were tested in same room and position, both tested seperately with nothing else using Internet.
When I get home I will see what a wired connection produces.
I know its not a major issue as what it's getting is plenty for what it's used for, but little things like this niggle me.
Not sure about the Windows 7 laptop, but Windows 8 which is a advent monza t100 definitely does and connected to BT HH3.
I think some modern routers can use two wi-fi channels. Is it possible that the slower computer is only using one channel, or a channel which is clogged up with traffic from neighbours routers?
Wireless (depending on the hardware and drivers) can hit the CPU quite a bit, and it's entirely possible that the Windows 8 laptop is a lower spec than the Windows 7 one, and this is contributing to the observed differences in speeds.
It's also possible that the wireless card in the 7 laptop is just better than the one in the 8 laptop.

Update:
I tried two computers copying a large file over my homeplug network last night.
My Q6700 tower with 8GB, spinny HDD and Windows 7 transferred data about 30% faster than my Core i7-3630QM laptop with 8GB, third generation HDD and Windows 8.
The Windows 8 laptop is at least twice as fast as the 5-year old tower, if not three times as fast.
Perhaps Windows 8 networking is just crapper than in 7.
No, really.
