West Brom have suspended Nicolas Anelka after the striker was handed a five-match ban for making the controversial 'quenelle' gesture. The club reacted swiftly on Thursday following the conclusion of Anelka's independent regulatory commission hearing. Anelka was also fined £80,000 for an aggravated breach of Football Association rules and ordered to attend an education programme. He has the right to appeal and his legal team has confirmed he is considering that option.

He's not going to win an appeal so it would be a waste of time and money. The quenelle is seen as offensive by some, even if the majority had no idea what it even was before the media turned it into a scandal.

    It's a satisfactory outcome.

He's dodged a bullet, the FA having accepted he "didn't realise" the salute was anti Semitic. Given his friendship with and the high profile nature of Dieudonne, its much like saying you didn't realise your mate Nick Griffin was racist. Then again, brains are hardly Anelka's greatest asset and I'm pretty sure his career in the Premier league is well and truly over.

It does establish (if it needed establishing) that the salute was anti Semitic and holds the line regarding the use of racism in generally in football.

But otherwise, time to put idiots like Anelka and Dieudonne out of mind and to move on.
