Man prosecuted and fined £300 for "NekNominating" a goldfish

Stupid craze, and a bit of a daft thing to do, but at the end of the day, it's just a small fish. He should have argued that Bear Grylls and people on I'm a Celebrity eat live grubs and other animals in the name of entertainment.

The RSPCA need to get a grip of themselves in my opinion.

If it helps to stop or slow down the stupidity of 'NekNominate', then I don't have a problem.

One problem with this 'dare' drinking game is that it involves a huge group of people, who often don't know each other. Thus you don't know the mental state of the person who is trying to outdo everyone else.

Allegedly, 5 people have died so far.

Can't see it being more cruel than catching a fish on a hook, playing it and finally bringing it out of its environment to die of asphyxiation. But presumably now the RSPCA have this prosecution under their belt that will be the next stage?

Why would anyone swallow a live goldfish? Just the thought of it makes me feel sick. I don't understand the Neknominating craze. If I had to go to such lengths to impress my friends then I think I would rather not have any friends. I think it's even more bizarre when people do it on-line when people that they don't really know have nominated them - why would you feel the need to impress strangers on the internet?

While it's a stupid thing to do, I don't see it as especially cruel. It's just a fish. There are many worse cases of animal cruelty that go unpunished.

This is actually a myth. Probably coined by people to make themselves feel better for keeping fish in completely unacceptable conditions, such as commercially bought fish tanks.

I don't think it's right for anything to suffer just for some idiot to get his 15 seconds of internet fame so I'm glad he was prosecuted. It might have "just been a fish" but it doesn't mean it didn't suffer. If he had eaten a furry animal alive, everybody would be up in arms.

Looks like someone's been on crack. And no, not the person nominating the goldfish. The RSPCA don't have any authority. They pretend they do. It's a charity who thinks they have power, anyone can do what they do. They work through the police. They do bring good, but trust me, being on the wrong side is no laughing matter, as my sister found out a couple of years ago.

You're right there. Most people put the lives of mammals above the lives of fish and insects. It's even the pinnacle of our primetime tv to eat large insects alive for entertainment.

I agree, it's a joke. I could understand if the guy downed someone's pet fish without asking, but not this.

On another note the legend Bill Kazmaier (ex multiple time world's strongest man winner) once had a Guinness world record entry for drinking 500 live goldfish in one go.
