Just watching the recap from last night and think there are some crazy choices and wonder if the judges just picking the ones for good tv rather than best singers..
Rubbish on names so...

Why not the Pharrel look alike(best friend of the guy who lost his wife) rather than the idiot headband guy (Gentle?) or the weeping camp guy??

And don't get me started on Tatiana - so annoying.

It's not about the talent - it's all about the ratings - and more people will tune in to see the idiots make bigger fools of themselves

A large part of the original concept of the show was to find stars that would sign to be managed by Simon Fuller and release records with Simon Cowell. Both men had long since shared a vision of using TV to sell records and reduce the reliance on radio airplay. They want to find someone that has the talent required to sell records, so it will never be all about the ratings. Bear in mind that the early stage auditions are attended by both TV producers but also staff working for 19 Management.

However, to do this, the shows need to be on the air and getting viewers. 19 TV get a bonus from FOX for achieving certain targets and with the success of the show ratings are still as big a part of the show as when it started and needed to battle to be recommissioned. Cowell often says that they only need one person and he's right. If that person is Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis or Carrie Underwood, then they have succeeded in the "Search for a Superstar".

It's all about striking the right balance. Just like every good drama needs a little bit of humour at some point.
