    Captain Phillips 6/10

Didn't really do it for me, felt it was too long, though obviously with merits, Hanks chief amongst them.

Saving Mr Banks - 8/10. Thought it was good, and glad it wasn't the overly syrupy sweet movie I feared, but not the best film I've seen this year by a long shot. Great performances by Thompson and Hanks though.

    The New World (extended cut)

I can understand why some people lost patience for this movie, though I was kind of swept away. The New World is a great companion piece to Terrence Malick's other tree hugging film The Tree of Life (though I think the latter is inferior and much less coherent).

A minor quibble is the mumblecore throughout large sections of the movie, mainly from Colin Farrell. Also I don't understand why he didn't attempt an English accent. Apart from that, I liked the movie :)

    8/10

Watched The Mask last night, realised as soon as I heard his voice that 'the doctor' was also in The Wire.

Blue is the Warmest Colour - easily my top 5 favourite of the year. A bit slow in the beginning but the storytelling is really fluid. 9/10

Snowpiercer - not sure if I actually understand the meanings behind the film. Might need a second viewing 7/10

The Undying Monster [1942]. Director: John Brahm

    5/10

Moody, atmospheric direction for a dull werewolf picture.

The Lodger [1942]. Director: John Brahm

    7/10

Victorian Whitechapel is full of fog and gaslight in this remake of Hitchcock's silent Ripper movie. Director Brahm bring his German expressionist touch and Laird Cregar is brilliant in the title role (his death 2 years later at 31 was a great loss to Hollywood). With the censorship of the time the victims are music hall actresses.

more atmospheric than the stallone version, this is very much an alt action movie, it comes in bits and pieces but when it does it does hit you ..... very visceral and extremely nice to look at, and introduces a important character into the filmic universe in judge anderson!

but my only grudge against it is it's too damn quiet ..... maybe i need to turn it up then :p

Elysium - Sci-Film about health tourism by spanish speaking illegal immigrants with bits of Robocop and Johnny Neumonic and the badass from Raising Arizona in there as well, Bourne is the hero and people live on the space station from 2001 whew!! You get a lot for your money with this one, its a bit confused but the cast do a decent job and this makes up for the films short comings.

Entertaining enough and a long way from the worst sci-fi film this year, 6.5/10
