Can you keep a dormouse as a pet?

I don't know a lot about dormice;but I think they're adorable...
Here in Holland they're very rare,so I don't suppose it's possible to keep them as pets.
What about the UK?Are they kept as pets?
If it was possible I would love to have one,but it probably isn't...:(

Have you thought of a Roborovski hamster? They are very similar except no tail.

Yes, we still have the cage from her chinchilla so we're hoping we can use that. Just waiting on a breeder to call with a baby. I'd rather get from them than a pet shop as they handle them from birth and they are a lot more friendly than some pet store ones.

There are also wild populations of escaped edible dormice or glis glis in some areas of the country, which look almost exactly like minature grey squirrels, and like them they can cause problems with chewing if they get into people's lofts.
As they are not indigenous I don't know if these wild glis glis are also protected but I used to have a couple of commercially-bred pet glis glis.
They would stuff themselves silly over summer and get quite fat then sleep a lot, eat relatively little and loose weight over winter, although being indoor pets they didn't quite hibernate.
They were just about handleable when they were in a good mood but could occasionally give a nasty nip if you tried to handle them when they didn't want to know. Really really soft fur though.
It was about 20 years ago and I don't remember if they were a true pair or just a couple but they never bred and I haven't come across any for sale since. Even back then they were about £28 each.
