Porting number advice

Just coming to the end of my three contract (thank god!), had quite a few problems with them, the main being the text messaging seems quite unreliable, in that people have sent me messages and i've not received them for a few hours.
Because of this and the other problems i've decided to change networks when my contract ran out (considering going on to Orange as they have some good deals and some friends have recommended them) I was just curious about porting my number, if I ported my number from three to orange would text messages in effect still be going through three first and i'd experience the same problems?
Sorry if this is sounds like a daft question, would prefer to not change numbers for obvious reasons, but unsure if i'd still have the same problems if I didn't.
