More medals and Olympic qualifiers for GB in the World Shooting Champs

Gold!! in the women's skeet team event - not in the Olympics unfortunately.

Silver! and an Olympic quota place (ie goes to the team, not to the individual) for Elena Allen in the solo women's skeet.

Also bronze medals for Steve Scott and Rachel Parish in the men and women's double trap, another non-Olympic event.

Good to see Gabby Jupp in the mix again - she looked set for a big breakthrough last year before picking up a nasty knee injury during qualifiers at the European Champs

Two results from the Sailing World Champs yesterday. Bronze for Nick Thompson in the men's Laser, and overall 9th for Alison Young in the women's Laser, so two team Olympic places.

Good live coverage on the BBC Red Button as well, after London I'd forgotten that sailing could be quite exciting.

So the final results from the World Sailing Championships in Santander were a little mixed for Team GB. 1 Gold, for Giles Scott in the Finn, and 3 bronzes was a bit down on our recent medal form, including 2012. However, we did manage to get at least one boat into every single medal race, so we have already qualified for the Olymics in all 10 events! :D

What happens now is that every British boat must compete over the next 18 months to get the highest possible ranking, because in the Olympics it will be only one boat per country per event.

Bit like in the cycling then - trying to stop us winning so many medals.

Saw this article elsewhere on Athens 10 years later..

Sad to see but maybe not a surprise.

If London will be looked on by future Olympic organising cities as a template to follow on how to correctly organise a games. Athens sadly will be looked at as the one avoid at all costs!

It's crazy when you look at it now. What chance was there of them needing a purpose built beach volleyball and softball arena after the Olympics?!

2 silver medals for Team GB in the World Canoe slalom championships - Silver for Mallory Franklin in the non-Olympic (will be added in 2022) women's C1, and silver for Fiona Penney in the women's K1.

Next year's World Championships will be the Olympic Qualifiers and the good news is that they are on the Olympic Course in London, where we always do well.

World Gymnastics update. Britain's men qualified in 4th place for the Team finals. Dan Keatings qualified for the Individual Pommel, Nile Wilson for the High Bar, Courtney Tulloch for the Rings. Dan Purvis and Nile Wilson qualified for the men's overall. Sadly Max Whitlock had a bit of a 'mare, so will only be in the team competition, but the team have the option to nominate Whitlock in place of Wilson for the overall.

The women are currently in 4th place in qualifying for the team event, with one subdivision to go. Other finals that look to be on, but not confirmed as there are still some countries still to go through qualifying:

    AA: Harrold, Fragapane
    UB: Downie, Harrold
    VT: Fragapane
    FX: Fragapane

Complete final results from the women's preliminaries

GBR qualify 4th for the Team Finals
Ruby Harrold qualifies for overall and for all 4 apparatus
Claudia Frangapane qualifies for overall, floor and vault
Becky Downie qualifies for uneven bars

    http://www.british-gymnastics.org/news-and-events/news/latest-news/4325-world-championships-final-for-gbr-girls

As far as the Olympics are concerned, we had to finish in the top 24 of the teams to qualify for the next World Champs in Glasgow 2015. From there we need to finish in the top 8 to get team places in Rio, so everything is perfect so far.

Some of the routines are on YouTube

Shame for Max Whitlock but the girls really do seem to be making quick progress.

Guess this is the real test thought.

China wins the team all-around final (again) by one tenth! Japan win another silver, and the USA bronze; GB just off the podium in fourth place (their best ever WC position).

Am I right in assuming the 2015 WC will have the team all-around as well?

Yes, I believe it acts as the Olympic qualifiers - only 8 full teams get to compete in Rio (although other nations can send individual athletes.) I think gymnastics is one of these sports where it can be easier to win an Olympic medal than a World Champs one, because the qualifying fields are always smaller at the Olympics.

It's actually 12 teams who compete in the Olympics. The top 8 qualify at the World Champs next year and the teams ranked 9-16 get another chance in the final Olympic qualifying event. The best teams in the world do tend to qualify though.

Epic finale to today's team event with China just pipping Japan to gold. British performance was pretty good overall & 4th is their highest position at a World Champs. Hopefully they can go at least 1 better next year in Glasgow. Good to see Max perform much better today, especially on Floor. Nile was fantastic today as well - I really think he can be up there challenging for All Around medals in 2/3 years time.

The Women performed as well as can be expected in qualifying - if they can match their qualifying position of 4th like the Men it would be the best ever performance. I think it's probably the best they can hope for unless the Russians are off their game.

Lo and behold, Nile Wilson has decided to withdraw from the men's overall final, leaving a place open for Max Whitlock to take.

He'll compete in the high bar on Sunday.
