Thinking about it, was she actually only one of two female companions in her early 30s (the other being Daphne Ashbrook)? Normally we have mid-20s actresses playing late teens/early 20s companions but rarely anyone older. That's a pretty poor statistic if true.
You're right and I guess in the 60's, it was as acceptable to have an older female companion as well as an older Doctor. I also guess it wouldn't have been quite right to have a sexy female teacher in her 20's strutting her stuff on 60's TV!
As for Daphne Ashbrook, she's a very underestimated and not talked about companion. On discussions on the TV Movie, it's always McGann, the Movie itself or The Master that provide the talking points but Grace doesn't get a look in. Which is a shame as I thought she was a great companion. I've seen her in a lot of other American TV Shows in the 80's and she's just as good.
I think if the TV Movie had become a TV Series she would have been superb. The chemistry was there between her and McGann and she was quite fiesty as well.
It does make you think though when you see someone attractive (or who is though of as attractive) from old TV shows and films and then you think that now they must be in their 60's-80's
