Where Have All The Aussies Gone?

Article in the Sydney Morning Herald picked up by the Times this morning pointing out the dwindling numbers of working Australians in the UK - halved in the last 5 years as the Australian economy has boomed. Poignantly three Walkabout bars have closed in London as well as the Bilabong in Wimbledon.

Boris reckons travelling Australians get a raw deal and should have the same movement rights as other EU citizens. Should work the other way too Boris.

Because English is their first language and they generally have pronounable names is why they appeal to Boris and his ilk, presumably.

I know a lot of my Aussie friends left the UK a few years ago. They were qualified Chartered Accountants and Chefs and actually worked hard over here and paid their own way. Some went back to Australia(where they owned houses and had family), others went travelling. I don't think Australia is suffering as bad as the UK is/was financially.

Interesting article. Am not surprised that these guys don't travel over to London to work. It's one of the most expensive capitals in the world, the rents are far too much and pushed up by the new influx of Chinese, Russians and EU working visitors. I have noticed one or two vodka bars spring up where Aussie bars depart.

They suddenly realised that a fun dalliance in London is a real hassle when you can't earn any money.

They've come to their senses and returned to a country rich in opportunity, where their skills are valued, where the wages more than make up for the cost of living, and whose government is actually in touch with society and real people.

Not to mention a lifestyle full of vitality and beautiful scenery.

And thank God the Walkabouts are closing here. They only attracted the most vacuous of clientele.

Tony Abbott is far from being a good PM (and not as good as Gillard imo) but at least he's more in touch with the average Joe when compared to overprivileged toff Cameron, who it seems is hell bent on making ordinary people suffer.
