The US version has announced that it is allowing voting by twitter. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tech/s141/the-x-factor-us/news/a347530/x-factor-usa-announces-twitter-voting.html

Will this ever happen in the UK or will there be too much concern over profits?

That's the difference. Voting is free in the US. I believe there's a law under which they can't charge for it.

It won't happen here unless product placement is allowed to happen on TV. In the US, Pepsi and Verizon pay huge amounts of money to feature on the show which covers the cost of the phone lines. Here, the voting is another revenue stream for Mr Cowell so he won't want to give that up easily.

It's just asking for trouble. There is no real security built into Twitter and it is so easy to get robot software to vote.

A talented computer expert would win easily regardless of whether he or she could sing or not.

Shame. I like the idea of Syco getting less profits and a winner that everyone that can be bothered to vote oposed to those that are happy to give Syco their money.
