I was a fat child and even bigger adult when I hit 20 stones I became ill with it, and realised my happiness with my being fat was just BS and I was actually happy despite being fat.

I have lost 5 stones and am far happier within myself.

I wouldn't say everyone should do what I am if they are truly happy, but if they do become ill with the weight then they do need to look at whether they can carry on as they are.

I think it's a personal thing though and not something people should be judged on and when/if people decide they need to lose weight there should be far more help for them than there is at present.

It's also not helpful people saying eat less move more even if it is true.

    Congrats your weight loss!

I was struck by your post as 20 stone is over two and a half times my body weight, so that would have been the same as me carrying a woman and a child around with me, it must have been exhausting.

    Maybe you should!

I am currently on a low carb diet - eat plenty of meat, cook with oils etc plus greeen leafy veg and berries.

The weight is literally falling off me and I've never felt better.

Its probably all the low fat products and bread / pasta / rice / cereal that we are conditioned to think are 'good for us' that are not. They are full of sugar.

I would agree with that it's only since I cut carbs and sugar and started eating butter and whole milk etc I have lost any weight !

Yes it was at the time it seems normal as it creeps up on you, much more energy now and hoping as I lose more I will feel even better.

I've been a size 10 pretty much my whole adult life except for a short period after I left home at 18 and my weight crept up to a size 14 which I hated. I felt frumpy and lethargic.

I've never been on an actual diet but I lose weight occasionally during stressful periods, eg when I qualified as a nurse at 22, my weight went to 7 stone (I'm 5'6'') and when my cat was ill/dying a few years ago. Generally, my weight is just very stable and I can wear the same clothes for several years (I have classic suits and wedding outfits from 20 years ago that I still occasionally wear).

I notice when I've put on a few pounds because my clothes feel tighter. I don't 'diet', I'm just more careful with what I eat for a few days until my weight stabilises. Otherwise, I eat pretty much what I want and snack at work on the multiple sweet, sugary treats we receive. I think it helps that I am fairly physically active in my job and I have been a vegetarian almost my whole adult life. I suppose genes and metabolism play a part. My father is slim but eats a lot, I am like him, but my mother is overweight and doesn't eat as much, far less than I do. However, she dieted a lot in her twenties and thirties and I strongly believe that continual dieting disrupts body metabolism so that serial dieters can never really eat normally again. I'm glad I've never followed any sort of formal diet and have just eaten sensibly and, I suppose, moderately (in comparison to others I socialise with).

I see a lot of morbidly obese patients and I often wonder how they have got so big? I put on a few pounds and I feel uncomfortable. I also notice that children nowadays seem a lot bigger than a few years ago. I think the obesity problem is a real issue today and needs to be addressed early because fat children invariably go on to be fat adults. Obesity carries multiple health risks, not just increased likelihood of heart disease, diabetes etc but greater risks during anaesthesia and more post operative complications.

I could do with losing a couple of stone, but to be perfectly honest I feel much better now health wise than I did 15 years ago when I was slim.

I would be a liar if I said I was actually happy about being overweight, but I've got to the stage now where I feel good nutrition and having the energy to excercise are more important health wise than the number that's on the label of my jeans. I remember how crappy I felt when I was slim and I wouldn't want to go back there.

It does get frustrating when people assume that if you are overweight its because you are lazy and greedy though.

I'm 14 stone and 5'10" - not mega overweight but more than I should be. I can't imagine why anyone would want to be fat tbh. I've started cycling, and its hard work but its getting easier and I can already feel the benefit even if I haven't lost much - but then that's down to drinking wine every night which is something I'm going to be addressing after this weekend.

They are if anything my husband has been more unhappy about his weight than I have about mine and he struggles as much as me to lose it. Together we are winning at the moment but to imagine he hasn't been criticised for his weight over the years is quite wrong.

    Thanks for the replies:)

Well , I kind of know how I got fat. I was a very shy kid, introvert, no confidence , (I'm still like this) I've never really played out much ,just stayed in and watched tv most the time,so I guess I never had lots of exercise .

Its so hard today though, there's so many hidden fats, sugars in food .

I've never been into sports so maybe that a reason , I think with me ive never really been into exercise.
I'm a postwoman so sometimes im walking around for 8 hours of the day ,sometimes im just sat driving a van,but I once heard you don't really burn off calories unless you're really out of breath/sweating etc...
Maybe its to do with each persons metabolism? The rate at which your body burns calories.

I do think having our family meal around 6pm then me going to bed just 3 hours later is bad though as the calories will have no chance of burning off ,so maybe a lighter meal then would help.

A couple of yrs ago I discovered I had Varicose viens in one leg but from what ive read thats not anything to do with being fat?

I've not been tested for diabetes, how can you get tested? My blood pressure is fine,we have a machine at home.

Also with the clothes sizing thing, I try not to take it to heart because I know it depends on which shop/company you get them from. A size 22 could be a size 24 in another shop
I'll be honest though, one thing that does worry me is now walking up a flight of stairs ,aches my legs and I get out of breath:blush:

Interesting to read other peoples stories:)

Any plus size women here who have sort of accepted your size?
    Are you happy being big?
I'm in my late 30s, always been over weight, but I've now reached a size 24.
I guess I do feel a bit miffed but at the same time I've just accepted it.
I have no desire to lose weight.
I do A LOT of walking at work (9 hour shift) and when I come home all I want to do is collapse =/
How the hell am I meant to 'go for a jog' or do some exercise?

I think I like food too much too. I don't go overboard , Im not a big meat eater, and I don't cover everything in butter or fat.

    Any other women ?

Not interested in any fat haters comments , save your breath :)

I've been overweight in the past. It feels shit and totally drains one's energy. Perhaps that is why you don't feel able to exercise after work. Even in a physically demanding job, we should still have the energy to do other things. If one is incapable of little more than working then life can be a bit crap.

Nobody would be happy lugging around a few extra stones of fat. Sweating and struggling in summer in uncomfortable clothes. I have yet to meet a thin person who likes to strap 60lbs of weight to their back because they love sweating and joint pain.

If you are saying that you are fine with the way you look, that's slightly different. If you genuinely like what you see in the mirror when you're naked (and would honestly say no to a slim figure if you could have one there and then) then fine.

It's incredible how overweight people manage from day to day tbh.

When I was younger I got to about 70lbs overweight. About 4 stones. Try loading up a barbell with 70lbs and just walk around with it for a while. No bloody wonder I had no energy. I carried THAT weight all day, every day!?!

I have huge issues with my post baby body... which is sad as I've grown a baby, I didn't get fat for "no" reason (although I have stayed fat through bad food choices)

I am not massively overweight. Losing a stone would be me back in the healthy BMI range and losing 21 - 28lbs would put me at a much happier weight.

However I am just not in the right mindset.

As an ex smoker and someone who lost 3st back in 2006 I know I have will power and commitment but I also know its is a lot to do with timing.

I love my food and if I ate what I wanted all of the time I'd be huge (currently a 14, maybe even a 16 but I'm short)..

what is a plus size... I see adverts that say ... catalogue for plus size women.... sizes 12 - 32....

I'm a size 14, so I must be a plus size.... *insert derogatory term*

I do PT (1 hour each morning 5.30am - 6.30am) 5 times a week...... I ride my bike regularly, a minimum of 10 miles easy. (at least 3x a week).. I run...... etc. I've also signed up to do a wolf run and a triathlon....

    so what is plus size?

BMI readings have athletes in the overweight category......

Indeed I think for me plus size is anything bigger than I feel happy being, so I am still plus size at the moment but hoe one day not to be. But I am well aware I will probably never be less than a size 16-18 which for some would be considered huge but for me having been a 32 will feel very much smaller !

It's power-to-weight ratio that matters, not weight, or anyone over 2 years old would be struggling to walk up a hill.

Fortunately - and this idea makes gym bunnies very cross, and you can find any number of made-up answers in ask.com contradicting it - on average, fatter people have stronger, more muscular legs, as common sense would suggest, since as long as they are physically active, the legs are doing more work.
Lean mass is logarithmically related to body fat. Thus, heavier individuals have greater lean mass, and because strength is related to mass, heavier individuals of all ages are also generally stronger when asked to perform simple tests of muscle strength. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3306482?dopt=Abstract

Plus size shops stock from size 14, but from 16 is a more usual definition.

    Dieting makes you miserable. Fact!

So does being overweight or underweight. You lack energy. You can't do things you want to do. You feel miserable. And in a cycle.. you eat to feel better. Which makes you feel worse.

i lost five stones that i piled on over the ten years i was with my second husband, he used to demand three cooked meals a day and then a take away, plus i had four hungry kids so did a LOT of baking. he was abusive and i think there was an element of comfort eating too. i lost my weight when i ditched him.

Excellent point. I have been weight training for over 20 years now, since I was about 18. I have no idea how much "extra" muscle I am carrying - probably a few stones. Which is very different from a few extra stones of fat.

I find this thread interesting. I'm a size 8/10, have been since I had my first baby. Before that, I was a 10/12. I struggled to put weight on after I had my baby, was even a size 6 at one point. There's no fun in being too skinny either, I was often asked if I was anorexic when nothing could have been further from the truth! I've often wished I could be a bit more curvaceous.

I don't worry about clothes size or scales tbh. How one looks in the mirror is all the feedback one needs.

A woman can be sexy if she's size 10 or size 16. It doesn't matter too much, if she is in proportion. If she's confident with her body that counts for a LOT.

As someone who has been overweight my entire adult life (I'll be 43 this year), one of the things I'm looking forward to with my new eating plan is discovering the muscles in my legs. They're there of course, they're just hiding under a bit of fat. I'm hoping to take the weight off at a relatively slow and steady rate as I don't want to be faced with too much excess skin. I'll likely have some but I hope with eating well, drinking lots of water, and exercising by walking/cycling I can minimize it.

I hadn't really thought about carrying the extra weight making me tired, but it makes sense. If you took your average healthy person and gave them a suit that weighed an extra 8 - 10 stone (which is how overweight I am), I reckon they'd be winded after walking a mile or two.

There's been a few comments about not mollycoddling fat people and that they need to hear the truth. I can honestly say that I've never doubted that I was obese. I was maybe in denial about what it was doing to my body (joints especially), but I was never not aware that I was fat. I don't expect sympathy from people, but it would be nice if they didn't act like asshats regarding my weight. I'm making changes so all I ask is that people show a bit of patience, I didn't put the weight on overnight so it'll take me a while to get it off. :)

    I'm fat.

I'm a size 18 and I'm 5 ft 7in. I currently weigh 13 and a half stone. However my BMI says I'm overweight. I feel huge though. This time last year a size 22 was tight on me and I had to buy my first and only size 24 trousers. That was the moment I knew I had to get weight off again. However I have a dangerous relationship with food. I have yoyo-ed between a size 6-24.

So when I start a diet I am terrified I am going to stop eating again etc. I have lost 4 stone in a year, slowly, safely etc. However, again I feel I am not losing enough and not quick enough.

I did notice the other night my engagment ring fell off my finger, yet its felt tight today. horrid circle.

I find this post really interesting as I am just under 5'6, a size 18-20 but over 18 stone. That's almost 5 stone more than you!

I find that even when I was at my smallest of a 14-16 I was still over 13 stone. When I lose weight I lose much more in inches then in actual weight on the scales.

Just goes to show that one size of 'fat' certainly doesn't fit all.
