The sing off was planned at least a week ago

The single elimination with a sing off was planned at least a week ago (TV times states the time of show), as X Factor had 1 whole hour to fill up, and if it was just a straight elimination the whole 1 hour slot would not have been filled up.

Nonsense - they could easily string it out.

The final has more time spent with the finalists not singing than with them singing - that's padded out by an hour or more. To avoid a sing off would only need 5 mins of padding.

I think you'll find the official web site says otherwise...

    http://xfactor.itv.com/2010/footer-pages/tv-guide/

"Series 7, Episode 9: Britain has been voting over the last 24 hours and now the semi-finalists find out the result of the public vote. The act with the fewest votes will leave the competition, and the others will compete in next week's final. Including live performances from the cast of hit US series Glee, former X Factor winner Alexandra Burke and chart-topping group the Black Eyed Peas. Hosted by Dermot O'Leary. Yeah, cos the official website has ALWAYS been correct in the past.

Yeah, while we're at it, they said the same thing in The Sun last week, so it MUST be true. :D

the length of the programme time doesnt prove anything!! Its the highest rating show of the night- they would take an hour slot regardless and usually it would be quite a drawn out show anyway- with the eliminated act singing a last song.

imo it was 100% planned to be a straight elimination with the lowest public votes going home. They had 3 guest acts on rushed into a 1hour show with sing-off it felt rushed almost like it was unexpected.

They didn't sing together, they could have sang together. :(

Was just thinking and the voting figures came to mind, it's likely that they won't even release the voting figures at the end of this series, due to all the fix claims becoming true

    There was no group song.

The eliminated person would have had a final song after their elimination which would mean that they would have both had a song / backing tracks prepared for this.

Group song + elminated person song would easily fill the time taken by a sing off.

....someone should have told Louis, and also had the contestants prepared then before Sunday! ;)

Also this site didn't do their job too well either yet they knew all the songs, order etc.....

The group song and a second Glee song that together would have filled the time taken by the two sing-off performances were dropped from the show.

WRONG. It has been confirmed that TWO Glee songs were recorded. Also, a group number wasn't shown. Therefore, they had up until the day to decide exactly how they wanted to fill the time.

If there didn't want multiple options why even record two Glee songs. It was to keep their options open. It's very transparent. It only requires a little thought to appreciate what has happenes and why.

Also, multiple judges (louis, simon) and Dermot stated that it was solely down to the public now, so again, sorry but you're totally wrong.

So - the acts aren't voting. The public is!

The acts weren't told until Sunday morning - by which time they knew Cher was so far behind Mary they needed a sing off.

Mary sang a song she had already performed, so there wasn't much practiced needed there. Plus they both would have had sing-off songs prepared which they didn't sing in previous weeks.

As already pointed out, why was there no group performance this week.

Every other year not only is there not a sing-off in the semi-final. There has never been a sing-off once it has reached the top 5 (i.e quarter final). So they can't use the excuse that there was 5 people in the semi-final to cover this.

I think they decided this a few weeks ago when it looked like Wagner might get into the final. :)
