The Simpsons is a cultural phenomenon and without the work Simon did in conjunction with Groening and Brooks to develop the show in its early years, it's hard to think it would have ever got close to that.
It's this that makes it a sad day for all Simpsons fans.

Although he had long stopped working on the show, I know he was still acknowledged as an executive producer.
