So to explain, the .conf file contains a fake entry for an imaginary service called TEST37 on the correct frequency 602MHz from Winter Hill. The other entries are for other services that it was looking for at various times before they were broadcasting. With this card most of the settings don't matter, it can still tune if the FEC is wrong - and the PIDs are completely made up and don't matter either - it is just enough to make tzap tune to the correct mux.
So tzap tunes the mux, -S does it silently, and the & drops it into a background process. Then sleep for 5 seconds just to let the tuner stabilise.
Next the dvbsnoop command dumps 805410 raw packets into the .ts file - that's approx 30 seconds worth. Finally the killall command stops the tzap background process to release the tuner for future use.
edit: p.s. calling the output file com8.something.ts is a bad idea if it is going to go anywhere near windows- com8 is a reserved filename related to the good old serial ports. Call it com8_something.ts to be safe!
I see well Im glad you saw the merits in getting a Freeview HD box even though you dont have a HD TV, many people wouldnt, but you could well end up missing out in the future without a receiver that can receive HD!
I shall monitor the situation. I can't get the streaming services, even though the box claims it can.
Anything changed on COM8? What is the HEVC channel now showing?
No, still seems to be repeating Colombia vs Uruguay. Of course they may be working on encoder settings etc but I wouldn't be able to detect that very easily. If you notice any significant changes at http://en.digitalbitrate.com/dtv.php?liste=1&live=9&lang=en&mux=COM8 please let us know, else I'm not expecting anything new until tomorrow's France v Germany game.
Also note that the white triangle wave patterns on the four sides of the central HD panel are animated - hence the asymmetry in the frame I happen to have grabbed.
its good, but I dont get why the centre image is so small and why have they not filled the background with squares?
The picture of the young girl probably isn't available in a higher resolution. Viewers may notice a difference if she posed for an updated testcard pic. ;-)

lol yes I was actually thinking that a wholesale resize of the testcard to UHD would have been the better option! I would make one myself, but I cant source the center photo at higher resolution myself.
Plus getting the frequency gratings right for UHD is beyond my skills in image manipulation!
I could do most of the rest ok though.
the animated part would be something that they could easily add in over the static image
oh and I like you link about the re-posing the centre image!
I have rescaled the UHD testcard as best as I could and I think the BBC could have produced something very similar if they had wanted: http://imgbox.com/299LrkxB
It looks much more like the normal style now

Capturing the transport stream to a file with dvbsnoop is what I was already doing. I've now tried MPC-HC (sadly windows-only) and it does the best job I've seen so far- which is slightly odd since I believe it also uses ffmpeg for its H265/HEVC support.
I've found Potplayer, the daum version plays fairly well, just not fast enough on my 3Ghz i7, I get ~35fps.

Sure, it looks like:
where channels.newmuxes.conf contains:

Currently a replay of Colombia vs Uruguay.

This one.

Without even clicking that link, I can tell you that the Technika STBHDIS2010 does not, never has and never will support the MHEG streaming channels.
You can get iPlayer on it (if the exact model doesn't end HY), but that's it.
Thanks. I'll check the iPlayer status. The streaming issue I confirmed with a Google.

To be pedantic and ignore the humour in your post (sorry) - wrong - the slide was found and was rescanned at 5000x5000 pixels - see http://archive.today/si9re which is a record of the former page at http://www.barney-wol.net/video/testcardw/testcardw.html
Unfortunate then that they chose to use an HD sized test card, centred within the UHD frame size, rather than resizing the whole thing for UHD.
The post wasn't particularly meant to be humorous, just an indication that the girl from the original test card had, indeed, re-posed the photo.

Good work
Thanks Im glad someone likes my apx 8 hours worth in windows pant doing that! whist watching the tennis today.

Best results were with a Samsung HU8500, plays a .ts file pretty much perfectly from usb hard drive.
