Seriously, this must be the most commonly misspelt word in the English Language.

A (well-educated) friend of mine repeatedly spells it as
"definately" in emails and it's actually starting to grate.

Would you spell "finite" as "finate"?

Oh this stuff really winds me up. They're/their/there is really not that hard to understand. Business is another one that gets misspelt a lot, as buisness.

    Is it 'misspelt' or 'misspelled'?

I hate it when people mix up 'whether' and 'weather'.

The most misspelled word on this forum must be "have".

So many people spell it "of".

As in could of/should of etc.

Makes me scream every time. How is it possible not to know the correct usage?

No mention of 'rediculous'? It doesn't even make sense spelled that way. It drives me into a hulk-like rage every time I see it.

ETA: Now I feel dirty for even posting that spelling. Arrrrgh!

I remember having problems with the spelling of definitely when I was younger.
It is just one of those words where you spell it how you think you say it, I suppose.

I hate when people cannot spell embarrassment, though.
The typical their/there and you're/your problems are always ever present and now I just ignore it.

If they were just studying DS, I bet "paedophile" would make the list as well.

Incidentally, while we're here, POPULOUS is an adjective which roughly means "having a large population". POPULACE is the noun which refers to the mass of people themselves. That REALLY gets on my tits.

I'm surprised 'rediculous' isn't on that list, 'cause I see it all the bloody time on DS.

So number 1 is separate, presumably spelt "seperate"? If so, then that actually appears in the OED as an alternative acceptable spelling! I was staggered when I discovered this...

I think "a lot" and "weird" are misspelt the most.
The internet isn't the best place if pedantic about spelling and grammar. I'm crap at both so don't notice most mistakes:o
